ok does anyone here take depro provera...well i just got the shot today and i have a question...my doctor wasnt theer and it was after hours so this nurse gave it to me and i left and i didnt get to ask when it would start working...as in when it would be ok to start having unprotected sex...does anyone know???

I have a shot too...it is every 12 weeks I have to go, the one I have...I cannot remember the damn name, well mine works straight away as it is almost pure hormone...Most people that jave the shot I have don't get any periods (menstruation) at all...I am assured that it is safe (I wouldn't have had it if I wasn't sure) so contraceptive wise most of the shots you can get work straight away..but they wont stop disease (STD's) so I would use a condom aswell to protect yourself from the nasties that lurk in underpants

you're in luck, i have a pamphlet about it right here:
if you have your fist injection during the first 5 days of your period you will be protect from pregnancy straight away. if you have the injection at any other time during your mentrual cycle you will not be protected for 7 days.
i was thinking of getting depo provera, but the doctor said to take the equivalent pill for a month first. then i'll know if i get any side effects before getting the shots. if you get side effects while on the pill, you can discontinue use. but with a shot, it's a wee more difficult to reverse.

Evil Cheese Fry...If it's your very first shot then 2-3 weeks is a good safety margin. after that you're sorted for not getting pregnant. Just make sure you get your shot done on time. I usually get mine done about a week early so i know I'm okay.
btw...your periods stop cause the Depo basically fakes your body into thinking it's pregnant and stops it from producing and egg. Therefor, no period. One of the better side effects in my opinion.

I used the shot about three years ago and loved it...but now being twenty nine and two children later i went with a tubal litigation...i'm happy with that too
