Ok, so this is a question that I hope sparks a bit of conversation instead of just a simple answer, here goes...

Wtf is up with people weaving yarn into their hair? I've noticed that it's mainly females, and females who dress in a (hate to label but it's hard to describe otherwise) gothic or dark sort of way...

any comments on this...?

I've seen hairwraps, but they're done with embroidery floss, or strips of fabric like Raevyn said, and wrapped around braids. They have girls on the beach that do them, and henna tats..they're popular with tourists.

I like doing hair wraps, but I prefer to use embroidery floss.
It has to be wrapped tight to look good. You can do cool patterns and stuff with different colors, ect.

most likely, but so is just about everything else that deals with asthetics in this world, let's enjoy it while it's here, as long as it's done properly.

I'm new to the forum, and i know I am a bit late with this post but...
that isn't yarn that you think you have seen. It is most likely synthetic hair made into dreads, or it is something called roving. They are falls, which is the fake dreads mounted on a sort of elastic that you wrap around your hair in a bun to give the illusion that it is your real hair, or it is box braided into your hair for a more permanent style. (And by more permanent, I mean 3-4 months as apposed to falls that can be put in and taken out in a matter of 5 min.)

And yes, Im sure it is in fact a fad that will eventually sour...but like someone said before, so is everything else. And if you like it in your hair, then go for it.

NO, it was DEFINITELY yarn. I knew the girls personally, it was yarn. Although I know what you're talking about, and they don't look half as bad, but most of the time they still don't look great or even good.

Yea, those type of extensions will look like shit. I have never tried yarn, and never will, because i hate the look of it, it just looks tacky. But when done right, the other stuff could look pretty awesome. I have been doing extensions and experimental hair 'inventions' for quite some time now, so I've got it down pat. It takes practice, otherwise you will just look silly.

I say be original, goddarn it and stop stealing ghetto-ass fashion trends from sik bizatches like Christina Aguillara and calling them "goth". I remember when geisha-doll makeup and jet-black hair meant something for Christ's sake! Then again, I'm a child of the nineties... But to each her own...even though it looks like trash...if you feel pretty, then go for it, girlfriends. But you won't catch my cute ass going crack-ho with yarn braids.
