Lifestyles Among Industrialized Countries - 05-22-07

I'm a middle class American who's never been to another country (and will probably never have the necessity or the money to do so), and while I get my news from BBC radio, seeing into other nations on a weekly television news show called "European Journal" has got me curious how life in other developed countries differs.

Sorry, I call bullshit. Some 1st world shit holes are worst than the 3rd. Europe, CCCanada and South Korea could burn in a nuclear fire for all I give a fuck. If I had to choose to move to China/Mexico/Thailand,Aruba etc over France, England, or Germany I would in a heartbeat.

You shouldnt give up on travel if its something that interests you. Its not as expensive as you might think. Its just a matter of getting the balls to do it, even if you're going alone.

I agree with thefr0g on this.

I think you should make sure you do the research, and have a few friends go along with you. It might make the experience worthwhile. Try to plan what places or where you want to go. There are tons of places that would like volunteers to help out with things, too. Does that sound like something you would like to do?

Deeshevil, I have too many commitments to be able to go off on a volunteer basis. I wouldn't want to be a tourist either, but if an internaltional occupational opportunity arises someday, I'll definitely consider that.

I thought you said the differences made you curious. Now you're saying you want countries that aren't different because the differences are evident? Why don't you just visit another State instead.

Traveling is indeed fun. It is also fun to just go places and live for awhile. Of course the only place I have been to outside of the United States is Mexico.

I have been to almost every State in the USA though. And lived in several for awhile. My favorite States have been Hawaii and Utah.
Lets see... Alphabetically I have visited or stayed in Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, Wyoming.... damn never actually thought about how many of them I have been too.... 35 of the 50... I need to visit the other 15 lol

I don't need assistance to see differences between my civilization & those of unindustrialized countries. Differences among industrialized countries are subtler, so I'd like other's insight.

I have visited many states, though not as many as Dyshade!

So you're not REALLY interested in travel then. You should just visit more states, ones you haven't been to.

Traveling is not only fun - you actually learn a lot, not only about the places you visit but about yourself as well.
I would definitely encourage you to venture further afield than just into another state - I realize that all states have their own "flavor", but they're still in the US, they're still under the same federal politics, they still use American currency and they still speak English. You can get quite reasonable flights to European countries these days, or even try Canada (you can drive up if you're close enough to the border).
Americans unfortunately have the reputation around the world of arrogance and ignorance about non-American countries, cultures, philosophies, geographies, etc. Yes, the US is a mighty world power, but that doesn't mean less powerful countries have nothing to teach us on a whole lot of different levels. They have fascinating histories that begin millennia before the US even existed, and delving into some of that provides a lot of perspective.

It's crap like this that makes the rest of the world think Americans are self-absorbed dinks. America issues far fewer passports annually than the UK or Canada. There is a big world out there: one that extends further than your home region. If you don't consider culturalizing yourself to be a necessity, I hope you never get the opportunity anyway.

I have family(My Dad is from Missouri) in Excelsior Springs and all around there including both sides of Kansas. So visiting family is what I was doing there. I was too young to be wanting to do much else at the time. Though Kansas City looked pretty interesting
