I know someone who bought a PS2 which didn't work very well though...
Some people are scoundrels. You just have to check their feedback and credentials. It's hard to get negative feedback, usually if a buyer doesn't pay up or a seller doesn't send/takes longer than stated to send/sends an incorrect or faulty item.
I had a dodgy buyer once, who bid for my guitar but didn't pay. I gave him negative feedback and he sent me some really nasty emails, the bastard.
Sometimes it's a good idea to email the seller with a question and see how promptly they reply, how detailed their answer is and how friendly they seem.
However, a lot of it is gut instinct. If you're spending a lot use PayPal which has buyer insurance.
