I have been around many artists and there are many artists I know who are known as GOTHIC ARTISTS.

Goth people love the art.. Goth people call the art GOTHIC.. and everyone is happy..

everyone except the artist.

Her art has some how been labeled by goth people. After all who knows what goth is other that the goth people themselves..

The problem exists because Enayla hates her art being called Gothic. She hates the fact that her art is associated with goth people.

So tell me.. Why is ANYTHING that has any darkness to it get assimilated by gothic people? Darkness isn't gothic.

How can art work that is non-goth be assimilated by gothic people? Its not for the goth people to own.. or to call gothic.

Yeah.. you are quite correct... take Jhonen the creator of JTHM... he looks the part... but if yo were to ever call him a goth he would probably sucker punch you .... lol....

really? hehe hmm... I don't know what the big deal is.. if a certain subculture started adoring my work... even calling it their own.. I wouldn't mind.. and I'd be flattered.

If you buy his Compilation book he has a fake interview in the back.... the interviewer asks him if he is goth and he kills the guy.... lol....

I do not think he has anything against Goths... he just does not want to be called one... hehe....

i think that to call her art goth would be cliche. if goths are mostly the ones who like and appreciate art that would make all art goth, but as we already know, not all art is goth.

I must say, I am very taken with Enayla's art.. It is absolutely magnificent...

I think that sometimes the art that comes out of people is maybe not the kind of thing they are into themselves...

I agree with gargoyle. I would be flattered if anyone liked my work. I can see why people see a gothic assosiation with it, and I think it is possibly a little bit curmudgeonly of the artist to say that she hates her work being asociated with Goth people...

I'm sorry but the fact that most of her characters wear clothes from the gothic period and link back to the original gothic art that concerned pallid looking youths dwelling in darkness and Edgar Allen Poe like musings..there really isn't any art more Gothic than hers that doesn't contain actual gothic architecture. It's the same thing when bands complain of being told that they are rock..when all thier inspirations come from rock in the first place.

To say that something isn't cubist or impressionist you must first understand what those styles are..her style is gothic there's no avoiding it...if she painted a flower no doubt it would be a brittle faded bloom. Artists allways want to be seen as original but it is enough to just be very good.

u are very right, tentacledead. its very beautiful artwork but i'm beginning to see how its being associated with being goth art as cliche as that may sound.

hmmm.... I was just about to write a post about pop culture 'assimilating' and then bastardising gothic culture.... perhaps the feeling goes both ways...

maybe sh just doesn't like being associated with the publicised 'oh i'm such a whiney bitch the world hates me i want to kill myself' gothic culture?

I'm sorry to say that her ideas are extriemely trite, as I said originality is not the foundation stone of good art, the abbillity of the artist to put thier ideas to paper (or anything else) and convey thier thoughts and feelings to the viewer is what makes art an accomplished piece or not, most modern art fails to get any message over to it's audience and so is meaningless and rubbish. Hers is fantastic.

As it stands now, I agree with the Tentacle boy.. partially. Too often people forget that "gothic" was a term coined long before Hot Topic made it's appearance and Trent Reznor was a sex icon. I don't find that her work is at all along the lines of naturalism, a dominant movement in gothic era artwork... it's too fanciful, almost elementary, in my opinion. To associate her work with the gothic movement as it refers to 12th-16th century architecture and the like.. is a gross exaggeration and very far from true.


The following is an example of true gothic art. "The Extraction of the Stone of Madness" Circa.. 1470something, if I recall correctly.

Gothic architecure of the 12th to 16th Century as you put it, seems to me related to the design and manufacture of buildings...

I respectfully submit that it seems to me by suggesting this is inextricably linked to a cultural phenomenon which has it's origins (in an equanimical sense) in the 19th and 20th centuries, it is you who is being somewhat fanciful...

I happen to agree with Tentacledead and Silverflame that the artists ideas are rather trite, and that if she is a person of character, she should appreciate the fact that people enjoy her work for whatever reason.

The only valid reason I can see for her to view a connection to goth people unfavourably is if she is actually daft enough to believe all that rubbish about Satan worshipping and suicide pacts being the norm in these circles...

Lesson #1: "architecture and the like"... which covers a broad range of things. I figured anyone with some common sense would take that to mean anything to relating to art.

Lesson #2: Garg started this thread stating that "gothic" people claim the term as their own. I supported his statement by saying that there is a difference between the true gothic style/era and the things that assimilate the name nowadays. I never said this is linked to a cultural phenomenon in ANY fucking century. Quite the opposite, in fact.
