| Why people buy consoles? -
07-03-02
I always wondered, why do people buy consoles, like PS2 or X-Box? That's something I can't understand... For me, personally, PC is enough for playing games, because most of my favourite games are released there anyway... So, I can't get it, why do people spend money buying consoles, when you have a PC, and if it's not powerful enough for games, you can just buy a good video card, add some memory and it will be cheaper in the end anyway. And PC is so much more useful for other things... Well, then probably there's something i just don't understand, it can't be that so many people are just stupid. There must be some reasons why people buy consoles I don't know about... Could anybody explain me that, please?

A few reasons that are easily (*cough*) overlooked:
1) The selection of games is different; some games that are coming out for Gamecube, for instance, are not coming out for PC. Thus, I will buy a Gamecube when the time comes.
b) My computer sucks; it's obsolete by 4 years. I don't have the money to overhaul my computer
5) I don't have the money to buy a new computer (they cost more, you see). True, the basic systems are getting cheaper, but if I'm going to buy a new computer, I'm going to buy a DAMN GOOD new computer
x) Consoles usually do not require big upgrades to play the latest games
18) I like some console games better than computer games
20) The face-to-face multiplayer, i.e. not everyone has to have separate, compatible machines; you can plan together which, goshdangit, is just plain fun
v) Consoles are getting relatively cheap
49x) Consoles are evolving, and I personally am starting to become impressed
zz) It's easy to take a console with you; ya just need to find a TV
100,00) Consoles fuck up a lot less than computers (for me), and I tend not to get frustrated with them as easily.

Just some more of my thoughts on the subject... Quote: |

| Yeah, this is true. I'd like to play some of the games from consoles too. The problem for me, however, is that almost every console has a small number of interesting games... Buying more then one console is a problem, and buying one for just a few games is not worth it IMHO. Oh well, it would be so much better, if there was just PC and all games were coming out on it... | I see it as opposite. I remember a time when I had Sega Genesis. At that time consoles' costs were MUCH lower then PCs costs... Now a modern console costs almost as much as a good PC, and now they do all that crazy stuff for consoles like hard drives, mouse, etc. that makes it actually another PC, but with unupgradable hardware. Then another problem for me is that console games themselves cost higher then PC games, so basically you will spend that extra money anyway... Quote: |
x) Consoles usually do not require big upgrades to play the latest games
| Yeah, they don't require big upgrades, you just have to buy a new one after 2-3 years to play the latest games... Looks the same to me... Quote: |

| So does PC... | |

A few things you said that made me kinda laugh a little bit:
Consoles DO NOT cost about as much as a good PC. The most expensive popular console out there right now is $200 USD. Find me a good computer for $200, and I'll become your wife.
Even if I have to buy a new console after 2-3 years, it STILL costs less than buying a new computer, or a bunch of new hardware. Easier to install, too, as there is no installation Games still cost the same, and thanks to backward compatibility, consoles are able to handle a wider array of games.
Yes, I know computers are also evolving. Most things do: it's called "the passage of time." However, the one thing that isn't evolving right now is the size of my bank account.
I'm not saying "don't buy computers for games." I'm saying "this is why people buy consoles," which is the exact question you asked.

| Heh, looks like situation here and there is pretty different... yeah, well, i mostly have to spend $200 a year to keep my PC "up to date"... , consoles here cost more though... that may well be the reason why almost nobody uses consoles here and a lot of people by them in US...
Personally for me the reason for not buying a console is just games themselves. Hardly any single console have such an amount of GOOD games like PC... Quote: |

| That made ME laugh this time... . Yeah, if the consoles are made by one company, that works, but try playing, for example, Nintendo 64 games on PS2...
On PC you still can play any old games, and there is such thing as emulators that let you play games from older consoles on PC. Was a lot of fun to play some Sega games from my childhood on PC now

i hope you cook and clean, bitch.
i think that one of the main points about consoles is that they're less hassle. when you pick up a game for the ps2 or xbox you know it's going to work as opposed to a pc where if you don't have a bad ass comp then the game might not work/graphics will be shit/it will run slow.
another thing is the genre of games. there are a lot of titles for the consoles that are simply not available for the pc. games like grand theft auto, devil may cry, metal gear solid, gran turismo and a shit load of others aren't made for the pc. Ever try playing a late 80s/early 90s DOS computer game on your standard new computer with its standard new OS? Does it work for ya? Doesn't work for me.

I like Jap RPG`s which are 99% of the time consoles only
I like the fact that I dont have to sit in front of a monitor to play
I have a big(ish) Television
I dont like FPS or very many RTS`s
The only PC games I would think of buying are either out on PS2 or X-Box
FFVI on PS is better than the ROM ( the SNES game wasnt released here) Work is of two kinds: first, altering the position of matter at or near the earth's surface relatively to other such matter; second, telling other people to do so.

BAM, bitch! BAM! | Yeah, that's sometimes a problem, but in most cases some tinkering with settings allows me to play them. I have a nice collection of really old games... Quote: |

| Yeah, that's a big problem We have only Final Fantasy up to 8th and Grandia, maybe something else I missed... But that's a matter of tastes actually... While I play Jap RPG's for their storyline and characters, their overall gameplay is not that good and their are too linear. I much more enjoy watching anime, because there to follow a great storyline you don't have to get through a hundred of boring random battles. I like US/Canadian/Euro RPGs much more, like Fallout, Planescape: Torment, Neverwinter Nights, etc. Quote: |

| Yeah, I hate RTS myself (with exception of Warcraft/Starcraft, C&C). I much prefer turn-based strategies, like Heroes of M&M, X-COM 1-3, some wargames... Basically there you can think all the time you want on your strategic decisions and that's nice.
About FPS... Well, mainstream FPS like Quake, Unreal, etc. got boring... Still they are good. But is there anything to beat games like Thief: The Dark Project, Thief 2: The Metal Age, Deus Ex on consoles? Then, there is a lot of tactical shooters, like Rainbox Six, Ghost Recon, Operation: Flashpoint, etc... Quote: |

| With Sony Playstation emulator you can play PS games on PC using the same CDs... Quote: |

| You're lucky!
YES! I know of things console games can't beat! The custom content and replayability!
When you beat a console game, you can as well just throw it away and forget about it. And if you beat it in just one day??? Modern PC games have a huge advantage here. If you've gone through official part of game, you can use the editor to make some more levels/maps/etc or make a new player model or something else... Or if you're too lazy for that, you can go to Internet and download some stuff from there others have made... Quote: |

| Grand Thef Auto? Ha! You missed! GTA 1-3 were all released on PC!
However, to be more serious, that's true, there's a lot of games that ain't released on PC, because the console producers want some games to be exclusive for their console, so that people would go and buy it. However, as I pointed out earlier, there is a lot of different consoles, and every one of them has a several number of really good games, that aren't released anywhere else. So, do I have to buy all the consoles to play the games I like? Would be so much better IMHO, if there was just a PC and all games were released for it... That's unfulfillable dream though...
... Argh, I just can't find a damn CD with Metal Gear Solid anywhere in my area. I so much would like to check this game out...
