| Guitar Hero: DDR for Heterosexual Men and Women -
11-08-05
After reading and watching reviews of this innovative game, I was left with one resounding conclusion: everybody seems to love this game. I've played DDR before, and I think it's really not dancing in any way; rather, it's spastic jerks akin to epilepsy and electrocution. However, when you you pick up the axe and play Guitar Hero, you actually feel like the guitar is just that... a freakin' guitar. While it's obvious not complete with strings, and instead has five fret buttons used separately and together to form chords, it does a really good job of simulating the motions and overall feel of rockin' out. Let's just say that I'm grounded in reality much of the time, but when I get into this game, I actually think I'm a blossoming rockstar. It's disturbing.
However, it's also addictive, fun, and incredibly well done. Even people who aren't interested in the rhythm genre should give this one a try; I literally recommend it to everybody. It'll put you back about $80, since the guitar itself is big and obviously custom-built for the game, but it's worth every penny. LLLLLiterally. You can rock out with friends too, but you'll have to spend $40 on another guitar controlla.
The songs are also pretty good, too. They got stuff from White Zombie, Helmet, Megadeth, Pantera, Queens of the Stone Age, Deep Purple, the Ramones, etc. etc. etc. The career mode also lets you play as different characters and choose from different guitars, much of which is unlockable and not available from the start. The first time you play it, PLAY ON EASY MODE. If you don't, you'll get your ass kicked.
Sadly, it's only on PS2, so if you don't have one, you're SOL. But, if you do have one, I order you to pick this game up immediatey. If a game can make me not play Warcraft, then it has to be something special.

I dunno bro, I play guitar and have for years...and when I tried that game out all it felt like was I was using one of those Toys R Us baby guitars with the buttons you push to make sounds.
I bet you would probably feel similar though about Taiko Drum Master... I got a chance to play it in China and it was fun as shit but it didnt feel all that realistic, especially since the drum beating followed the rythm and not the actual beat...

I just take the "rhythm genre" label into consideration, though; I don't really expect to be playing a guitar; if I did, I'd go buy one and take my ass some lessons. You ever see that South Park where the DDR master tried to dance in real life? Looked 100% ghey. I just take the game for what it's worth... I actually feel like the reason I'm so good at the game is because I'm a drummer and a gamer. Rhythm and hand-eye coordination are all you need.

They should have made it real. Would've been way tight and they could have probably charged a lot more. Make learning how to play an instrument really fun? That would be great, not to mention they could do it with so many instruments.
As it stands, I know how to play the guitar. If I were to put out $80 I'd rather buying myself an actual guitar. I can understand the idea of it being fun, and I'm sure it would be... for a minute. I have DDR, played that a grip at first too, not so much anymore. I have Tony Hawk games too, not the same as being on an actual skateboard, but fun. The Career mode for this Guitar Hero game sounds like fun, I just can't see putting out that much money to do it.
Now if they could bridge the gap and make that shit real... wow. Don't Drink and Park. Accidents cause people. To view links or images in signatures your post count must be 10 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

Because it wont sell in that case, it takes a lot of effort to get your finger strength and skin calloused out, most people would quit like most people who decide to play guitar do. Instead its simplified into quick button mashing. Why does it not suprise me that these kinds of games along with karaoke are so popular in Asia? Noone plays instruments or starts bands there...there is practically no Rock n Roll.

Oh, I don't know... I bet it would sell. Sure, some instruments would be more popular than others. A real guitar career career game could be made more exciting than say... the flute. heh. But I think there would be a huge market for it. Don't Drink and Park. Accidents cause people. To view links or images in signatures your post count must be 10 or greater. I seriously doubt it, simply because playing a guitar for the 1st time isnt easy, in fact its quite hard especially since most people dont have the finger dexterity that comes with playing for a looooong time or the finger strength that comes with being able to hold down all 6 strings with 1 finger. Maybe it'd sell to people who are already guitarists, but even then... whats the poiny? They can just pop on thier favorite music for free and play along.

Alright, guitar fags. Listen up: IT IS NOT A GUITAR. It is not trying to BE a real guitar. Game = NOT REAL. Game guitar = NOT REAL GUITAR. Fuck, I've been a drummer for 9 years, and I still get a kick out of Donkey Konga. Why? Because they AREN'T REAL DRUMS, and they aren't trying to be. FUCKING GAMES, dipshits. Enjoy them before your pretentious natures end up suffocationg you.
Goddamn guitarists... they're almost worse than singers. Almost.

But when you've had the best, why would you want any less?
When I can rock out on my $1500 guitar to any of the before mentioned songs (and make beautiful music without the help of a game) why would I want to do it on a $80 piece of plastic? Because it's a game you can play with other people who don't know how to play guitar (which I intend to)? Because the nature of playing a game and trying to beat it is much different than playing an actual musical instrument by yourself? Because the game can maybe make you sound better than you actually are?
Musicality breeds douchebaggery. I'm guilty of the same when it comes to drums sometimes, but try to distinguish gaming from grinding. Think of it as a guitar-shaped controller, not a guitar.
