Final Fantasy Radio Network Opens

Offering a legitimate solution for gamers interested in tuning in to a fine game soundtrack online, Square Enix today announced a partnership with America Online, whereby tunes from the Final Fantasy series will be broadcast online. Starting November 18, the America Online Radio Network will feature a new Final Fantasy channel, streaming some 200 songs from throughout Square's popular RPG series.
The station's library includes the entire selection of tunes from Final Fantasy XI and its Rise of the Zilart expansion, plus selected tracks from past games on the PS2 and PlayStation. It will be available through Radio@AOL, Radio@AOL for Broadband and Radio@Netscape, under the "Soundtracks & More" classification.

The service will only be offered for about six months, through April of 2004, so prospective listeners should tune in assiduously

Making Windows Gaming Better

This article may sound redundant since I already expounded upon this topic as part of my hung-over rant regarding the alcohol doused festivities attached to Microsoft's "Let's Make Windows Not Suck" event. Now it bears repeating. Now something real has at long last come from all the talk. As part of Microsoft's overarching plan to dominate the entire universe, the big MS is trying to improve the state of Windows gaming, making our platform more accessible to the masses and enjoyable to those not capable of understanding simple things like installs and system requirements. The first step is Game Advisor. It's up right now and you can use it.
Dean Lester, general manager of Windows Graphics & Gaming Technologies at Microsoft:

"Windows XP is the best platform for PC gaming today, and these tools make it even easier for millions of gamers of all types to find, enjoy and extend their gaming experience. The Windows XP Game Advisor is a fast, easy-to-use website resource that will help consumers pick just the right titles for gamers on their gift list this holiday season."
By selecting an age category and then a preferred genre, the Game Advisor will pull some of the most recent, "hottest" games based on undisclosed criteria (which probably means Game Rankings ratings and paid placement). Once you see the type of "action" game you want for someone who is "17+", the Game Advisor can point you to official websites for more information and can even analyze your computer and determine whether or not you'll be able to play the game. Apparently I am 1180% capable of playing Call of Duty. If a simple percentile rating will not do for you, it's also possible to see a component breakdown, which compares the recommended and minimum specifications to your own immensely powerful machine. I call mine Braniac.

Though Game Advisor is currently the largest component of this multi-pronged attack by Microsoft to convince the computer illiterate of the joys of PC gaming, right now Windows XP Extras and Games for Windows are also live. Extras, as you might imagine, includes specific content for download designed to expand some of today's more popular titles with new maps, modes, colors, whatever. Additionally, there you can also find game related Media Player skins and things of that sort. The Games for Windows section of the website, perhaps a bit more immediately functional, houses some basic but comprehensive explanations of sound and video cards and will eventually include tutorials on a variety of gaming topics to ensure people playing on XP are well informed and ready to enjoy the fruits of their machine's labor. Like Game Advisor, both Extras and Games for Windows can be found at the newly redesigned XP games website.

It's a solid first step. Of course, the site will be expanded as time rolls on. Additionally, we expect to learn more information about no install games, a standardized PC gamepad, and a universal requirements system in the near future. Until then, please enjoy the website for all its worth.

TGS survey paints bleak picture for Microsoft, action games, and software developers trying to break into the Japanese market.

TOKYO--CESA has released the results of its survey from this year's Tokyo Game Show. CESA (Computer Entertainment Supplier's Association) is the industry organization that runs the Tokyo Game Show. On the last day of this year's show, the organization surveyed over 1,000 gamers about their opinions on everything from cell phone games to favorite genres, and now the survey results are available for download at the cesa.or.jp site. The document is in Japanese, but a CESA spokesman assured GameSpot today that an English version is coming soon.

Here are some of the survey's highlights:

Unsurprisingly, PS2 led the console ownership poll: 79 percent of respondents have one. PSOne and the original PlayStation followed, with 62 percent owning one of the two machines. Nintendo captured third and fourth place with the Super NES and GBA/GBASP, which had 58 percent and 56 percent ownership respectively. Microsoft's Xbox didn't fare nearly as well, with only 10 percent of respondents stating owning one.

According to complete CESA statistics, ownership of Microsoft's game machine ranked lower than five consoles that aren't even in production. Each of the following systems are owned by a portion of respondents numbering greater than 10 percent: Super NES, GameBoy Color, N64, Dreamcast, and Saturn.

But the next question put Microsoft's situation in a more positive light: when the respondents were asked which console they would like to buy, Xbox was the second most common response at 17 percent. GameCube was the most popular response with 27 percent, with the PS2 at 13 percent.

The survey also offered insight into software preferences. The heavy preference for RPGs is eye-opening: 39 percent of respondents identified it as their favorite genre. This is far ahead of every other genre: strategy gaming, the second most popular choice, tallied only 7 percent of the votes. Meanwhile, first person shooters and LAN games received scores under 1 percent.

Figures like these make Japan's game market look like a tough nut to crack for overseas software developers. The statistics for ownership of overseas games are even more discouraging: The percentage of respondents currently own non-Japanese software? Just over 1 percent. And only 4 percent expressed interest in buying such software in the future.

Could these results really be representative of the Japanese game market as a whole? GameSpot contacted CESA to ask this question. The response? "Not necessarily." Apparently TGS attendees tend to be hard-core gamers, and their responses can be different from surveys taken with a larger, more diverse set of respondents. The spokesman pointed out that CESA's "2004 Games White Paper," due in the summer of 2004, will include data from surveys of a broader population. The spokesperson said he expected to see significant differences between these results and the data collected at the Tokyo Game Show.

it takes the gundams from all the different series and puts em into one strategy game...

hmmm that's pretty cool, I might have to get it and try it out.

its in japanese though so... you might have to fumble around a bit to find out what each thing does...

theres one for wonderswan color... and ps2 and a bunch of older systems... this is the first g generation for gba...

YEah that's alright, I have alot of dating games that I got from my friend, They are all in japanese too so I am used to it.

hmm well... ive finished sdggga already... quite short... now im waiting for the US release of gundam :megurai sora ... because itll be in english yay..

Well, wether or not you consider it news, FFX-2 and FFXI are dominating the charts in both the US and Japan (Although Japan may have clamed down by now), and with the heavily awaited Final Fantasy 7: Advent Child, square is just rackin' in the cash.

Oh, and for the Counter Strike players on X-Box, I heard that it really quite blows. Graphics are poor quality, and the Live version was damn near empty (Friend said he couldn't find games bigger than 6 total), and that it has just gotten slammed by critics. Anyone play this yet? I don't have an Xbox.

I just went out and bought budokai 2 thinking it might be cooler then the first one, But alas I Beat it in 2 days.... kinda dissapointing.
kinda like the first one......sad sad, sad.

at least the loading time is much better... but i like cell shaded compared to the first...

only thing i didnt like about budokai 2 was that the terrain didnt get destroyed when you use super moves

Yeah , I don't like the whole gameboard look to the story mode.
