The humble candy cane! The Christmas candy cane symbolises the real meaning of Christmas. The cane itself is representative of the shepherds crook. The three red lines(on proper traditional canes not the gaudy imitations) spiralling down the cane represent the father, son and holy ghost and the blood of Christ on the white background of purity/virginity. I didn't know this until a few years ago....I believe the mint flavour even has significants but I can't remember what. Anyone else have some interesting Christmas trivia??

Didn't know that. I miss candy canes. In school we used to bring bags of them and eat them all through the last few weeks of school. I don't think I've had once since school in fact...
and you're 'still hungry'! Yeah, I didn't know they were in any way connected to the 'real meaning' either. I just thought they were coloured lollies that were made to hang well on a Christmas tree.

I don't suppose anyone here knows the pagan origins of Christmas, do they? The birth of Jesus on December 25, the Son (Sun) of God born on the ancient festival day of Sol Invictus (the Sun Unconquered, heavily worshiped by ancient Romans). The shepards tending their flocks nearby wouldn't have been doing so in the winter.
The Christmas tree originates from the ancient Egyptians, while the mistletoe originates from the ancient Druids in Britain and Gaul (France). The mistletoe originates from a belief that it would drive away evil spirits or protect the user from nightmares if placed under a pillow.
The Christmas tree came from the Ancient Egyptians, who every year on December 21, the shortest day of the year, they would hang evergreen branches on their doors as a symbol of life's triumph over death.
