| Boys love weapons -
09-17-05
We have a small collection of weapons in our lounge. While I think they are pretty, I'm not obsessed with them. I my experience, boys just seem to love these things. Why is this? have you seen my marbles?

The need to feel intimidating, maybe? It's hard work to work out and become the alpha male, when you could just drop half a c-note and pick up a really nice idiot proof rifle instead. Same thing goes for melee weapons, although on a lesser scale, and many people will institute "skill" as a part of it, too. I've found this often to be an attempt to play off the role of being disciplined as well, without actually being disciplined.
In general, weapon obsession often seems to be an attempt to add depth to one's personality, always with the notion of being "dangerouse", and depending on the weapon, the addition of being "mysterious" (fantasey weapons), "exotic" (katana or other Eastern weapons), "noble" (Great sword or other Western weapons), "crazy" (fully automatic rifles or explosives), "badass" (butterfly knives or switchblades), or something along those lines. Sad thing is, as long as that list was, it isn't nearly exhaustive. Whatever the collateral reasons, I will re-emphsize that for men, it is an extension of the need to feel powerful, feared, respected, etc.
Keep a sharp eye out for these people. They'll generally keep their weapons on display, practice with them freely in front of other people, and/or have their pictures taken with them in "cool" poses.

At first man used his hands, then he needed to be more powerful, so he made extension of his arms, weapons. Then he added ranged weapons then massive weapons. All in the need of power and protection. I want to live in a world of peace
Without conflict, like the one I’ve seen in my dreams.

...I have over 50 daggers and some swords. Personally I collect the very ornate and beautiful to look at pieces, and while I do take pictures of them I rarely include myself in the images. I keep them on display in my private room and do not share them with that many people.
As a further note, I find that the women that see these daggers actually get more excited about them than I do... To view links or images in signatures your post count must be 10 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

I mainly have weapons for protection. My house has been broken into 2 times before, luckily I was not at home either time. If it happens again and I'm here, I'm going to defend my home and my life.
I don't really bring weapons outside of my house unless it's late at night and I'm on foot.

Jeez, you guys sure are quick to take offense. But like I said, guys like to feel feared, I think trash talking like this is just further evidence of that. Suffice to say, it's dually stupid on the internet, seeing as how all you can really do is talk.
For the record, I own quite a few weapons. A Zukuri style Katana and matching Wakizashi, folded steel, true tempter line. I agree, Jobe, there is intrinsic beauty in some weapons. These two masterpieces occupy a solemn corner in my bedroom.
I also have a Claymore mounted on my wall, along with a British cavalry saber and a dress sword on either side. Maybe this seems hypocritical considering my previous statements, but what makes the difference, in my opinion, is lineage. These weapons were owned and used in battle by my ancestors. They serve as a reminder to me of where I come from and the price paid for my life and my freedom.
My father bought me my first firearm about half a year ago for graduating from HALO school. It's a small personal defense weapon, 38. snub nose revolver. I can't hit shit with it.
I've spent the past year or so living by firearms. I was ranked as an expert with the M16A4 rifle, 38 out of 40. I was ranked as an expert with the M4 Carbine, 39 out of 40. I qualified with the M-249 SAW and the M-240 B rifles.
Most recently, I received a medical discharge for an inability to physically perform my functions as a soldier after two 5.56 rounds to my upper left shoulder rendered me incapable of bearing weight or raising that arm past a 45 degree angle.
I know about weapons, I've been on the delivering and receiving end of plenty. There's no need to question my sentiments about them. What angers me is not the weapons, it's the people that use them and practice with them with empty hearts. The people that keep them around because they look pretty and want to be known as the type of person that has a specific type. Of all the weapons I own, not a single one has a vestigial spike for dramatic effect, eleven runes engraved on the blade, or old timey rust painted on to make it look like something it's not. As far as I'm concerned, those things are a mockery of what they intend to praise. "...Now Swear The Blood Upon Your Steel Will Never Dry,
Stand And Fight Together BENEATH THE METAL SKY!"

If it is illegal to kill people, why should weapons that are used for killing people available? Defending youself is totally different thing.
I have 3 men in my lounge right now play fighting with a dog and playing with weapons.... have you seen my marbles?

Because criminals will get their hands on those weapons no matter what you do to get rid of them. That is why they're criminals, after all, they do things that are illegal in the first place. If you disarm the populace, the only person you're really disarming is the law abiding citizen. The idea is that the law abiding citizens should legally have access to the same weapons that their would be aggressors do. How well is an unarmed citizen supposed to be able to defend themselves against a semi-automatic firearm? Sure, if we were all Shaolin Monks we could probably do without weapons, using our hands as forged weapons against any close ranged attack, even with a firearm! But... we're not. We're Joe Schmoe pasty white belly roll Americans/Canadians/English...ans... dude, what the hell is the plural for people from England? "...Now Swear The Blood Upon Your Steel Will Never Dry,

Craz,
You expressed disdain for all weapons enthusiasts by describing them as nutjobs. Yes, there are some oddballs out there. But the vast majority of the knife & gun collectors out there are stand up guys.
Discipline? I know quite a few veterans out there that like to shoot. Quite a few martial artists too.
What is funny is that you yourself have a collection of edged weapons.
You know that alot of people are into fast cars, sleek airplanes, and boats. I would like to see what kind of disdainful expression that you can come up with for those enthusiasts. | You just contradicted yourself.
Lethal force is justified in cases of self defense.
