Assuming you understand cosmology* and the theory of levels, it is the method of altering subjective reality via changes to the objective reality through the focus of Will. Ritual and correspondance are used to help the mind penetrate the subjective reality to reach the objective. Pantheistic and Wiccan witches use their deities as both a channel and source for psychic (mental, whatever...) power; others use the power which is inside themselves.

*As above, So below. The Universe is a projection of the Self (the whole and entire Self - with a capital S. Called Kether in Qabbalistic terms) and simultaniously the Self is a reflection of the Universe. To deviate from the point onto my personal theories - my understanding of "All numbers are infinate; it makes no difference" (Liber AL vel Legis, Crowley) refers to cosmology in that there are infinate Universes/Selves, one inside the other. Thats just me, and as he says: it makes no difference.

I wouldn't just go by Crowley, that was a really good explination, but not the only one. Besides different groups that practice magick have slight differences and variations in the way they veiw, manipulate, and use magick. The only two things I see that are constants are 1) will and 2) belife. It sounds really stupid, but one of the best explinations (theories) of magick is, that I have seen, is in the white-wolf book Mage: The Ascention (lol.. ok that just sounds cheezy..)

Yes, there are many theories - I've never read "Mage: The Ascention", and it may seem a little wierd to be buying that alongside "Liber Null" or something, but I'll try to get hold of it, hehe. It's my pleasure to help, Antipop, and thanks for the comment asilentrevolt.

i was just curiouse becasue i already knew the basics and wanted to know the thought pattern and beliefe system that one must have before performing such things.

I like 2 of those choices.

Simply put in the basest of terms (no offense intended).
It is using the energy that surrounds and permeates us in a controlled fashion to create a desired outcome.

kinda like the force combined with david copperfield..

training, practice, belief... those are the basics you need..

aaaaa: those 'rules' as you call them, are not just put in to keep you on the right side. it has to do with energy. when you do a spell, you send out energy. this has to go somewhere, it doesnt just dissolve into thin air. like darwin said (or was it newton?) every action has its reaction.

negative, or selfish wishes uses more energy, and puts you out there as a bigger target, because most of that energy is focused on yourself. being a target is a very bad thing. that means not only do you get the reaction from your own actions, but quite possibly also other kinds of stray energy out there. it also makes you easier to attack by others, if they so wish.

I have no problem with a lil bit of extra energy, perhaps you'd like it focussed back on yourself, if you'd just mail me a strand of your hair...
