| Why are people insistant on believing in god? -
08-07-01
i was just woundering why everyone wants to believe there is a god or devil out thier.
You probably guessed i was a none believer by what I have said already. But the way i see it, humans seem to have made god and the devil as a way of further controling thier world. They make threats called sins in order to make certain humans who think different or behave different act more to thier liking.
I also see the idea of heaven as a way to help humans to not fear death as much, so they have something to look forward to. But at the same time they are frightening them with the threat that when they die they may go to hell to exspeiriance eternal suffering.
I see God as a role model humans have made for themselves, since humans feel they need somethng to give them an example of what is right or what is wrong by the example of Satan. Humans feel they need to create moral boundries in order to keep a calm sociaty or else thier lives would be chaotic.
And finally, I think humans pray meerly to give them hope for the future and to futher streagthen there bond with God and to feel that they are being protected and aren't alone in this vast universe.
Remember:: I'm a philosypher not a alien. So I am only human.
Dark-female I watch as darkness transends, the huanting smoke of their decaying bodies calls to my soul with ever lasting feeling. I sigh with happiness and shovel another dead corpse into the flames.

Because Humans need answers to A LOT of questions of life..Who created me, who created this planet I live in, what is my purpose In Life.So we don't feel an empty void in ourselves and we need to be loved, there will always be one man who can help us( if we help ourselves, lol) and love us. Moral boundries=Religous dogma for some people maybe they agree with everything, every rule and law but it narrows the mind to have absolute right and wrong in a world which is a mix of both. Work is of two kinds: first, altering the position of matter at or near the earth's surface relatively to other such matter; second, telling other people to do so.

Archangel humans WANT answers they dont need them at all. I`m not going to fall over and die because I`m ignorent to the inner workings of the cosmos.
Vincent from FFVII. I got it off of a link that Dark Senchi gave me. You want the link in a PM? Work is of two kinds: first, altering the position of matter at or near the earth's surface relatively to other such matter; second, telling other people to do so.

Humans were stupid, they didn't know why rain falls or why we die..but they didn't want to look stupid..so they became out with an idea that there's a god whos so-so powerful..with this theory you just could explain anything..Somebody died?..Why?..God wanted so..it was the easiest way out..
nowdays we now a lot more and there are very many who don't believe god anymore..it's just my opinion..and people who are still believing in god..they don't want to look stupid- they're proud..even I would believe in God when all my parents and grand-parents have believed..it's just they don't want to look stupid for beeing believing all the time in thing that dosen't even exist..

I've noticed a trend in the posts on this particular thread to look at a belief in the divine as something detrimental. I will probably be covering ground already mentioned in previous posts, but I want my own view complete for the sake of argument.
In the past there was no scientific explanation for things. Weather, astronomical events, etc, were explained by gods, spirits and such. However even as a technologically advanced race we still seek answers that seem to be rooted in a divine cause. Is this because there are things about ourselves, our psyches, our very place in the universe that science cannot adequately explain to our satisfaction? Is it because that despite our advancement we still have an undefinable connection to that spirit of divinity that created us and all that is? These questions cannot be answered with any real degree of certainty. Some go through life without worrying about such things, and certainly some feel it is unecessary, even stupid to waste time on such ponderings.
Personally, I have not found any religious beliefs or particular concepts of Gods that can satisfy me as 'the' answer. I do however believe that there is a creative force that made the universe and set things into the motions and patterns they now hold. To me, the order of the universe itself suggests a guiding hand. There is an old quote I am rather fond of, the author of which I am unaware of. "The likelihood of the universe being created as it is by accident is about the same as the chance of the unabridged dictionary being made during an explosion at a printing factory."
I bring forward the concept that perhaps it is not those that seek answers outside of science, whether through philosophy or religion, that are lacking. Perhaps it is those who do not have anything questions in their lives that take them down these paths who are deficient of spirit? Perhaps those who are perfectly content to accept things as they see them are not looking deeply enough at life...

I'd always thought that I was a Christian. According to the definitions I've heard from Sam and some of the others, I'm not. I believe in one God, however. The reason that I believe in God are ones that Shadowborn covered in the above post, but I can tell you two instances which convinced me that not only is there a God- but he's watching. And he's got a sense of humor.
First, the Titanic. Here we have a ship that was built to the highest safety standards of the time. This ship was the pinnacle of years of ship-building knowlege. In fact, it was bragged that "Not even God could sink this ship" Not only did the Titanic sink, it sunk on the maiden voyage, by an iceberg that wasn't supposed to be there.
The second instance I heard about was nominated for a Darwin award. Some lawyer was out fishing in an aluminum boat with some friends in a lighting storm. This guy decided to be a smart-ass, stood up in the boat and said "Here I am God, come and get me..." Guess what? One less lawyer. As a side note, apparently his two friends found religion that day...
Kat ...the cat on velvet pattens stole along the quiet hill. "And this" she whispered "Nephew, is the way to stalk your kill..."

They have nothing else to hold on to and they have to find something that seems logical enough to believe in. They want to think there's actually some being out there who loves them unconditionally and find peace in it. Ha. You are your own worst enemy, embrace yourself.

actually... we want to get away from logic when we search for answers... or at least, thats what we dream of...
christians believe that they are the favored sons and daughters, that all will be forgiven as long as u ask... no reparations... no whatever... just paradise for a word... sure people will invent techincalities, but...
it takes an effort to change ur mindset from a fantasy/dream one to one of logic... i still love to dream... i hope to fill them eventually and am taking steps to do so, but i realize that they are dreams and have forced myself to look at things from a realistic point of view... THATS where logic comes in... ___Nick_the_Rogue___ To view links or images in signatures your post count must be 10 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

Ha. | By 'they' are you referring to Christians, or just people who wish to believe there is a God, or gods? Not everyone believes that if there is a God, that God is a giver of unconditional love...

THATS where logic comes in... | So one can't have a dream and take logical, certain steps to acheive it?
I have a dream of becoming a published writer, hopefully sucessful enough at the craft to make my living from it. I am submitting pieces to editors for review and possible publication. I have and continue to expand my grasp of language and writing through education. I study and research in an effort to express things with greater clarity and understanding. Isn't this logical pursuit of a dream?
Some things that in the past were considered part of the realm of fantasy have become a reality. Landing men on the moon, undersea travel, flight, and a plethora of other things have been made possible. So who is to say that things we consider fantasy are simply as of yet beyond our understanding. Perhaps knowledge of God is yet another on the list that simply has not become possible yet. Because of our own limitations as a race, or simply by design, who can say?

hey, thats my dream too! go fig...
what im saying though is that while dreams are possible, a great many of them u wont accomplish...
i dream of being published, walking on Mars, and evicerating everman... but since they are dreams i know that to expect them all to come true is irrational and false...
and by dreams i mean one man's, not the combined effort of a nation like the moon landing and so forth...
its the individual that i speak of... ___Nick_the_Rogue___ To view links or images in signatures your post count must be 10 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

its the individual that i speak of... | I wouldn't find expecting to accomplish all three to be irrational.
If you wanted all three strongly you could accomplish them. Granted, the first would take strong effort on your part, the second would rest on the chance coming in your lifetime, and the third is illegal, but all humor aside it would be possible to accomplish all three.
Individual dreams are often not as individual as you'd think. If enough individuals possess the same desire for something, it could very well become a collective effort. The search for answers to the mysteries of the universe is one people across the Earth take part in.
I don't find individual dreams any less attainable simply because they are pursued by a single person. Obviously this doesn't apply to things that are recognizably improbable, i.e. a child wanting to grow up to be a racehorse. I'm speaking of a rational, mature individual setting their sights on accomplishing something and working to attain that goal.
