Same reason as why religion is this complicated:
Magic grants power versus those who do not know how to use it. Make it more complicated and it does not become common knowledge. Which in turn gives those who -do- know it's core more power.
The might game... *sighs*
At least magic, to a certain extent, is valid. This in sharp contrast to -some- religions.
