I know a small bit about the satanic religion. Now, I know that satanism is not based around the worship of satan, becasue it is a more greedy and self-centered religion. But, between satanism and the worship of satan, what is the difference in the actual philosophies???

Basically.. though I am not a Satanist.. from what i understand.. there is Traditional Satanism.. those that Worship Satan.. and Those Other Guys... the ones that are in the CoS... church of satan... lavay and such.. however you spell his name... and they get really angry if you mix them up.... I like people though regardless of thier religion.... so the CoS crowd I think follows a set of rules far different than Traditional Satanists.. I read that Satanic Bible once long ago..... I remember thinking that The Necronomicon was a much better read...

Satanism is a set of beliefs in yourself, a set of rules and morals. While there is no worship of anything or anyone except yourself.
Devil worship, or satan worship involves worshipping a corporeal being, the devil which is stupid because there is no heaven, no hell, no god and no devil.

I think that they Lavey satanists are just a little misguided and setting up the CoS is a walking contradiction. If you don't believe in a corporeal being, then why set up a church, a place of worship

Lower taxes than calling it a group. Besides which Gang/group/gathering etc. dont sound as good as Church Of Satan.

Agree with RedMeat ... taxes mostly. Look at the Church of Scientology ... they admit (at least they've admitted to me) that they're not a religion but a "way of life" (their words). Yet they call themselves a church :)
