Removing the veil? The Mayor, Ken Livingstone suggests that leaders in the muslim community rather than exterior politicians and MPs should abolish the veil.

The veil is very offensive in my view. It denies me the right to have a normal talk with that person. It makes me feel uneasy. Not to do with religion but more to do with covering up the face. I want to see the other person's emotions. I cannot detect any emotion when trying to speak with a full veiled person.

In Turkey, they banned the Fez and in France, they made it a criminal offence to wear a religious scarf, a crucifix or any religious symbol.

This does not deprive us of freedom. It gives us a greater freedom. It gives us the ability to feel at ease with all ethnic people and means we can build towards a world without war.

I work for a tow-truck company, and trust me, I've seen some horrendous actions from all walks of life, but the veiled drivers are the worst.

They generally put the veil over the wheel, and kind of shuffle their hands beneath it. Very disturbing. Not to mention dangerous. We tow lots of them, most get themselves bogged somewhere stupid. Or they can't figure out where to put the gas.

I actually find them worse than the 'occa (read aussie bum) in the 2000 tonne ute with "bush pig" stickers. At least the 'occas can drive.

if it affects driving that much, then it should be limited. but not when your walking around. let people hide there face if they want. if i was an ugly cheerleader, id want to cover my facetoo. just because youre not muslim doesnt mean they shouldnt be allowed to be. just like we get to be goths even though everyone else isnt.

In the United States we have the Freedom to practice Religion as long as it does not infringe upon anothers Freedom to also practice whatever they wish and that it is within Federal Law. As such we can express ourselves as we deem fit. If someone wants to kneel to the east and pray they certainly can.
Once you begin to create laws which inhibit religious practice you also create a fascist state. You must allow everyone to practice thier beliefs within limits. Doing so is a far louder argument than prohibition.

Do you mean the burqa that Muslim women wear? I've never seen a veil before, but 1 politician in New Zelanad (that isn't high up at all in the chain of command) wanted the burqa gone.

His reasons for making women remove their burqa made me furious. I'll go into it in more detail why etc when I figure out if we're talking about the same thing.

The women who wear the veil are setting themselves up for misunderstandings. This is the 21st Century but yet they don't appear to go by any religious calender. Remove the veil and make it illegal. Anyone wearing a veil should be deported to where they came from.

The reason I'm boiling over is that the politician here wanted the burqa removed because he said that was a security issue. Burqa can hide one's identity and they can rob a bank. He reasoned that bike helmets had to be removed in a bank so therefore burqa should be removed.

I'm pissed because:
1. No person needs to wear a bike helmet in a bank, so they SHOULD be removed.
2. Burqa (veil) isn't about fashion - you don't just take it off when it suits you. When he can evidence that women wearing burqa are really a threat in a chain of bank robberies, then we may have something to talk about.

Right now, the people that rob banks wear hoodies (hooded sweatshirts). Maybe we should ban those too. *sarcastic*

You ban burqas and you are making criminals out of people that have done nothing wrong. Please note that wrong and illegal are 2 different things. Just because you don't want to wear one doesn't mean that others don't. Why can't human beings be entitled to a little privacy and personal freedom. These women have done nothing wrong.

How would you feel if one day what you where every day became illegal. Would you burn your beliefs because someone told you they were old fashioned?

The burqa has been around longer than you have. They're not "setting themselves up" for anything. How you perceive them is a result of your own intolerant society that is slowly undressing themselves to nothing.

Get a clue. What next? Anyone that is different? Anyone that has an accent?
