Humans are a social animal. It's natural for us to form into groups. One of the ways we do that is by religion.

Humans are also violent animals. It's natural for individuals and groups to come into conflict with each other. I think wars happen more because of natural resources, but religion IS one of the things that can bring two groups into conflct.

If there was no such thing as religion, we would still form groups based on something, and those groups would want to kill each other.

Religion is, in many cases, the primary excuse for the haves to steal from the have-nots and for the have-nots to overthrow the haves.

Giving that kind of power to atheists as an elite group would make them just as corrupt as any religious heirarchy.

But it would stop people from involving religion in the governmental doings and feelings and whatnot.

Saying that atheists are more moral than religious folks is the same as saying religious folks are more moral than atheists. Hasty generalization.

I'm not talking about morality, but rather the fact that religion will often find it's way into the decisions that a religious political person makes.
Atheists have no religion, and as such are a tad more "open" at times.
Then again you also have your bad atheists who should be smacked around.

I know nothing of logical positivists.
However I am a logical pacifist, with a hint of insanity that hovers ever so close to the surface of my mind and thoughts, threatening to be unleashed at any moments notice!!!!

I don't think that there is a problem with bringing religion into politics, even though I'm not religious myself.

The separation of church and state is essentially a good thing. I don't believe any religion should be given arbitrary precedence over another. However, that is different from separating religion from the state and the business of government. The thing is that the state is ultimately made up of people, and many of these people are religious. That is the way they work and the way they think. If their values are based on their religion then that's fine. All our values are based on something. If you don't like fundamentalist-Christian values then don't vote in fundamentalists. But so long as they preserved religious freedoms and equality then I see no problem if, should they be elected, they governed by their own values.

I agree with you that all of these are related but not necessarily inter-twined.
However, look at the Crusades. Also if we didn't have fucked up clergy in certain religions, we wouldn't be having this war on terrorism right now.

But you can't always have someone in power who shares the same values that you do. If you live in the US then the majority of your population is religious, so if you're not then I'm afraid that you just have to shut up and put up if religious people get elected. Nor would it be fair to compel someone to give up their values for your own when they're in power. This is democracy, it's a good thing.

'If we take in our hand any volume; of divinity or school metaphysics, for instance; let us ask, Does it contain any abstract reasoning concerning quantity or number? No. Does it contain any experimental reasoning, concerning matterof fact and existence? No. Commit it then to the flames: for it contains nothing but sophistry and illusion.'

'The heart of man is made to reconcile the most glaring contradictions.'

Then you'd have groups of power-mad athiests attempting to completely abolish religion, in order to "establish a better society". Same difference as having religious fundamentalists in power, you just have one group attempting to force another to believe as they do.

note that the countries ruled by the officially godless communists were responsible for multiple millions of deaths, primarily of their own people

irregardless of religion, governments are gonna fuck people over

Yes, because it is (at least with every governmental model tried thus far) impossible to divest government of self-interest. As long as that is there, people will use their positions of power to forward their own private agendas.
