Understand that I am myself religious, and I'm not trying to bash religion. I'm not yet another arrogant atheist insulting everyone else's viewpoint. But the more I talk to other people who are religious, the more I hear about the same thing; Heaven. They look forward to Heaven. Heaven will be so much better than here, etc. Call me odd, but Heaven's really not that interesting to me. I'm more interested in fixing Earth. There's absolutely nothing wrong with this planet. We have the technology and the ability to turn the World into a paradise, all we lack is the will and unity to do so. Somehow, I don't see it as being part of God's plan that people hum to themselves about how nifty Heaven's going to be while patiently waiting to die. I don't think anything in the entire Bible can be read to that context, yet so many Christians I know seem to support this idea...I dunno, maybe this should be in the Christian board, but I think it probably applies to a lot of other people.
So, is religion just used as escapism by most people? And if so, why?
When people talk of the freedom of writing, speaking or thinking I cannot choose but laugh. No such thing ever existed. No such thing now exists; but I hope it will exist. But it must be hundreds of years after you and I shall write and speak no more.
''There's absolutely nothing wrong with this planet''
see i don't feel this way ........but people are so stuck on heaven and god being all mighty but no one every stops to think of other posablitys....i think i don't know the truth but am open to ideas....

i think people should spend more time worshipping the earth they are living on, rather than some mythical place that may or may not exist...depending on the belief of course .

For some it may be so. The idea of heaven as the future end, enabling one to endure present grief and trouble because of a belief of a greater final peace to come. But is that all bad..? If consciousness is the ultimate reality, which I believe it is, and there is existence after death, then the foresight itself is not wrong. It is when a person becomes lethargic, in regard to doing what one can for good in this life, that is the wrong.
Also, someone's idea of expected prosperity or riches in heaven may be another possible reason for motivation or religion. But yearning for the realization of a thing you know precious little about is not something to be taken lightly. How is one to know that the afterworld is not a hundred times the hell and sorrow that life might be here?
I believe in paradise, or heaven, but it doesn't cause me to take my eye off the ball, as far as only greed, or escapism, rather then doing what I am able to better life for all here.
Do what is right, not for fear of punishment, or desire for future reward (i.e. heaven), but because it is the right thing to do. Actions and belief not out of fear, or want for gain, but out of honor.
i think its pretty pathetic and stupid for ppl to believe in and look forward to a concept like heaven... they should realise that its only a myth, and every myth isnt always true
ppl should stop living their lives as if they have heaven waiting for them to live in after they die
"enjoy this life for it might be your last "
Sure people whould enjoy their life but they shouldn't "cross the line", and we shouldn't forget about others......what is GOOD for one person is BAD for another.
It is better to be hated for what you are than to be loved for something you are not.
