this is an idea i had in the free will thread started by blueboy...
if god exists, there is no free will.
if god may exist, he exists, because the mind will conform to a new set of standards, a new way of seeing, in order to function in a universe based on a theistic world view.
even an agnostic, then, could go to a heaven after death if there were one, because his mind would, in considering the nature of things, at least be able to entertain the possibility that there's a god, and so god would be there, and all the effects of god's presence would benefit/harm him. (this i know is not what the bible says.)
only the atheist then would really be damned, because he alone would be unable to ever surrender things up to a hypothetical higher power, and so his actions would be on his head alone, and he would stagnate in disbelief, unable to strive toward any goal higher than those which humanity had already presented to him.
i doubt this idea will go over well, but i'm eager to hear responses. "every year they grow smaller. every year they hate us more. we must not remind them that giants walk the earth." |
