Modern Physics (namely cosmology) says that the big bang brought all of the matter and energy in the universe was created in less than one trillionth of a second from absolute nothignness. Which is essentially impossible; how could everythign be formed form nothing? Modern cynnics (like most of the folks in this site) have created the antitheistic question of "If God is, indeed, all-powerful, can He create a stone so dense that even he could not lift?" Which really pisses religious folks off. It used to really piss me off until I came to the completely nonsensical answer of "Yes!" I then continue to say to those (often annoying) people "why the hell not?!"But seriously, i don't really understand why, if the reason and logic that these people preach is based on a very simple paradox, can't they understand the very simple paradox of faith?

Good points. But your antithestic question neglects what modern physics has discovered which music already knew about decades ago, namely that matter and energy are flip sides of the same coin. Einstein's theory of RELATIVITY was a mathematical formula that RELATED matter to energy. Also, it sounds to me that the question about the rock assumes God TRIES to LIFT the ROCK with ARMS or some such physical appendages. God don't need to do that.

Aside from my 2 arguments, I wholeheartedly agree that ALL religions are based on a paradox, namely that faith implies fear, which is a shitty way to live. In the Bible, God asks "Why are you afraid? I did not give you a spirit of fear."

Kinda off subject here.. but have you heard about the Big Shrink? It is supposed to have happen and will happen again.. though theres no proof or anything..

After the universe has expanded to its max it starts shrinking due to the cyclic theory (that everything in the universe is in a cycle).

So it expands and time moves forward. It contracts time moves backwards with out the living creatures noticing.

So after it shrinks to nothingness again.. another big bang happens and it expands.. people are reborn.. time moves forward thus some one has tried to explain reincarnation.

Looks like they borrowed from the Egyptians, who said that Ra started out on a big lily floating above the primordial chaotic WATERS. (water, being symbolic of primordial chaos and nothingness). Or maybe they both had ti right. But considering that Genesis was written after the Jews escaped from slavery of the Egyptians. Either way, it is saying pretty generally the same thign as modern cosmology: That everything came from the nothing. Except in this case, God is the nothingness, but I don;t think that means that there is no God, simply that God is, as a rule, incomprehensible.

Actually, the idea of a 'big shrink' to follow the big bang is losing ground.

Recently scientists set out to prove that the expansion of the universe was slowing down ... that is, leading towards stopping in order to reverse. The performed measurement experiments on distant galaxies to plot their speed and direction, etc, and were surprised to discover that they were wrong. Not only is the universe continuing to expand, but it is ACCELERATING rather than slowing down. If the big bang theory is right, then the momentum of the 'explosion' should have been lost a long time ago, but it's still going.

It's nice to know that nature can sometimes surprise the physicists of today!
