You realize that If you do the voluntary possesion/medium thing then you are going to need another magic user to portect you from hostlile entities trying to gain entry.

Anyway the basic formula for summoning the dead is simple, the circle of course is so that the Spirit cannot attack you, stalk you, or harm people you know.
You'll need personal items i.e. rings, clothes, corpse, at the begining to energize. You'll want spells that energize the connection between them and the Spirit itself, in effect dragging them to it, or just calling if you want.
A Good Banishing ritual as well, it isn't pretty when Spirits get loose and decide its time for some fun, or perhaps just to get you back.
Some talismans designed specifically to hurt spirits if they come to close, this not only gives extra protection from spirits you've summoned but also haunted houses when you perform exorsisms the houses and many other situations.
A good way to gather experience in this field is to primarily deal with hauntings, i.e getting rid of them, calming them dopwn etc.
Also gather info not only on Necromancy but Mediums, Hauntings and ghosts, as well as out of body and near death experiences.

I agree, you have to have some method to protect yourself doing such things. It can be quite painful if you don"t.


I learned that one the hard way.

We each walk the path that we have decided to walk - just know this. I was once really big into Necromancy(Yes Jorydn....you were right about the Necronomicon) and I have also successfully managed to summon a spirit of the dead. Understand that it is NOT for someone who simply wants to dabble. It can cause extreme psychological and spiritual damage if you are not careful! Also, I would advise you to do this - read heavily into Demonology before you began your study of Necromancy. I know all these people tell you Necromancy is calling upon the spirits of the dead - and this is true, however it's not only the dead - demons also pick up on the necromatic waves you send out. Necromancy is by far one of the darkest types of magic you can get into because it breaks the universal laws that keep the world of the living and the world of the dead apart. So be careful.
