I'm trying to make a compilation of legends and myths, like Atlantis...the phoenix...nephlims...things like that. But I need more ideas. Does anyone have a favourite legend? Do you have any you can post here? Or ideas for searches I can do?

Personally i like the Norse myth of Thor's journey to Utgard. I don't feel like doing alot of typeing right now but if someone dosn't know the myth just ask and i'll post a condensed versoin of it.

Overall Clearwitch, the Norse myths are my favorite and I think they far excede the quality of the Roman and Greek myths.

Norse myths...I didn't even think of them...I grew up with them so to me they are no longer exotic and new...but thanx, I'll look them up later.

read some of the keltic myths and legends...deidre of the sorrows, and rhiannon's story are beautiful....I don't know much about atlantis...but find donovan's song atlantis...it is a beautiful story of atlantis...

The Sleeper beneath the Sphynx...... I have found scant information.... legends and such.... mostly warnings dire about its awakening... should that happen....

one legend tells of how one of the ancient creators went into a form of suspended animation until its brothers return..... which would be 360,000 years from the beginning of its sleep..... the Sphynx has been unreliably dated to further than 200,000 years ago..... the crypt below has been also unreliably dated to more than 300,000 years ago..... are we now nearing the epoch of its awakening???

that legend is also very unreliable...... yet most of the reliable information about the crypt below the Sphynx has been hidden...

Have you talked to dear xuley dy? He's told me a bit about that story...

I picked up some good books on Myths over Christmas but I was generally looking for so called Mis-Myths.
A documentary about the wicker man got me started.
Apparently, the ritual of the wicker man started in the early seventies with a film!! not a real ritual at all.

The book I'm trying to track down now is called "The Golden Bough" which analysises the roots of commonly percieved Celtic myths and where they actually came from.

Is that "The Golden Bough" by James Frazer? If so, you can get it online in different editions from about £3.00+postage. It doesn't just cover Celtic myths though.

I also picked up a pretty good book on Prophecy down through the ages and how those prophecys changed in translation.

I was basically looking for short stories, online, that I could conveniently steal and post on my site...something so close to the originals it's not copyrighted... I'm so slick... :p

Here is a ledgend(actualy just a fragment of the History of The Myst Lands) you will find nowhere else.

During the wars of the Myst Chain two great Pendragons, Xavier Nathan(an evil Avalanian*) and Æther(an Atlec†). Both raised armies but trained each completly diferant. Æther taught pacifism and patience. Xavier taught batle tatics and dark arts. When it came time for the battle Æther's armies paniced and forgot their training and retaliated against Xavier's.
Æther saw this and asked the IAM for a chance to train a smaller group of soldiers. The IAM consinted and told Æther to rise into the air and block Xavier's path with faith and both would be releaved of their armies for Æthers second chance, Æther did this and when Xavier lashed out at Æther all thier powers combined and sent a shock wave that destroyed all armies below and coused the earth quakes that destroyed Atlantis, Æther's home and the largest island in the Myst Chain. The battle ripped all Æther's flesh from his body, and crippled Xavier for a thousand years. Now only three Myst Islands remain; Avalon, Tae cal, and the Ilse of Elven Prince.

*Not all Avalanians were evil, Xavier was a tryant and ruled unjustly.
†Atlec's are the natives of Atlantis they are winged humans, desendents of liliths angelic child.
