actually, in the "good 'ol days" it wasn't so cool or edgy, it was another option to organized religion, free from anything established as national standards and expectations based on mass media, only a handful of people were experts and you didn't have to pay twenty dollars for a paperpack of spells, rituals and tables that have been done and redone since, the sixties; it wasn't watered down with over a dozen forms, everything from natural witches since birth to mythical/human halfbreeds, and an insistance that wicca is an ancient tradition.
i've had these complaints about it, for several years now...and it's only getting worse, it's no longer about "to know, to dare, to keep silent" it's about "oh looky what i claim i can do"
and then i realized why it was all, a sin...you're placing faith in everything, but where it should be; not a god, but your heart.
i chose Adonai above all others, because He had the most to offer with less for me to lose, besides; everything it says i can't do, it's healthier for me to not do, the ten commandments no problem...the pork thing and small lies are requiring some work though.
