what is the reason for having earth, air, water, and fire? are these elements usefull in some way? and if they are usefull in some way... what is it that these elements are used for? for one thing they are the essential components of life. so these are the four things we need to live..... well earth is mother gaia the provider of (food) water is sustenance and (replenishment) fire is the begininng (creation) without it we were never created and air is the sustainer of life itself in all aspects (life)


i've been thinking about this ever since last night. and trying to understand the reasoning by having earth, air, water, and fire for living... if you people have other thoughts to put down to help me understand more about this. please feel free to do so.

Fine, Lets first understand something the Elements stand for the Elements in a multi dimensional sense, meaning Air isn't just the air we breathe, it also means something else. In this it has a physical meaning, a phylosophical meaning, a Spiritual meaning and a magical one.
Now you mention Mother Earth (Gaia being a Greek name, and not from the same pantheon), yet you forget Father Time (Air) her Consort. The Mistress Of The Sea (Water) and The Hunter (Fire).
The there is Mind (Air), Heart (Water),Desire (Fire), Body(Earth). Now these realtions are becuase of How these elements affect you, Fire effects people sexually, Water emotionally etc.
Lastly Earth is the Physical, Air is Time, Fire is renewal, and Water is Tranformation.
I could go on but on a magical level these elements are used becuase of all of the above, but also becuase the are the priime aspects of Life, there is not a thing in this world or planet that doesn't contain or is affected by all of them at least in part.
Elements are the most powerful magic and unforgiving to learn. But also are the basis for all higher magic, remember that without Elemental magic, Ceremonial Magic, and Wiccan magic and all the rest wouldn't work. They are nothing but a Houses built ontop of a Foundation of Elemntal Power.

Earth- Belial
Water- Leviathan

they can also be related to directions

Fire- East
Air- North
Earth- South
Water- West

I am an astrologer so in aspect to astrology the elements are qualitative to human attributes in example birth signs are put into groups of fire, water, earth, and air, people born under fire signs are particularly hasty, aggressive, hot if you will, and best described as fiery, water signs are deep, emotional, warm, and watery, air signs are thinkers, "in the clouds", airy, and cold, earth signs are logical, practical, "down to earth" earthy people

actually, the earth person would ground the watery person, water type can get a little...wishy...at least in my experience.

as for the child, that would probably depend on that day it's born and/or it's name.

also, if you look into it, the five elements represent different points on the pentacle, Mind or Spirtuality being at the top, followed by earth, fire, wind and water (if anyone knows the actual order, pm me, i'd like it for a tat design). back to the zodiac, i am a Gemini born on the cusp of Taurus... by definition, i don't get along with myself, which is very accurate.

the history of the four elemental catagories dates back to the ancient greeks, i forget the actual philosopher, but he divided all matter into the four groups... or claimed to. of course, the metaphorical representation of the four elements are just as important as the physical... if that means that's the way you walk.

This is a form of the medicine wheel. There are many variations depending on faith.
