I'm wondering who of you online wrecks do believe in the Asatru religion

I'm more aligned with the kelts...but the norse have some good stories...

I follow the Norse traditions, more or less, but I don't believe in the Norse gods as actual beings...more as icons...sources of power, for those who needs such. I've participated in reconstructions of blôts, and if I ever get my ass in gear to jhoin an asatruegroup, I'll probably get to participate in a real one.

Well I am not an online wreck yet I will answer your question..... no I do not though I have read quite a bit about it attempting to trace the Sumerian Dieties through thier many transformations starting with Babylonian society.........

Even Christianity stole many of the asatru figures like Jesus was inspired by Thor

Well personally, i believe that all Gods and Goddesses link back to THE God and Goddesses. I Am a believer of Wicca for all those curious.

They are as plausible to me as any...and far more interesting than most.

Eons might be taking it a littlr far...the religion is only about 1500-2000 years old...before that they worshipped 'vanene'...I have no idea what you call that in english...Freya, Frey and Njord were the only ones to survive the transition. And Germany wasn't the only nation to follow those gods, Norway, Sweden and Denmark were part of it too.

Jesus was not inspired by Thor Dear Sir. Nor does "Asatru" as you call it go back much further then perhaps 500B.C. Give or take a few hundred years. The Germanic Tribes were never actually dominant in the scheme of things until they attempted to take over the World in 1937. You should read a bit more Dear Sir.

Xuld is right...The christian religion and the norse religion developed separatly...BUT when they christened Scandinavia, they did convert some of the norse gods into equivalent christian figures...Balder became Jesus, Odin became God, Frigg, I think, was turned into Mary...and Loki/Fenris became the devil...

it is so sad that when christianity first started coming into being, that they had to twist, pollute and damn so many noble and beautiful deities...did they feel that their god was so weak, that they needed to eliminate his competition?

No doubt. Let us not forget that Christmas was originally the celebration of the darkest part of winter, and I would not be surprised if Easter was the Christian "adoption" of the spring celebration, markinr the end of winter. Many early religions had trinities, and the Christian version of God, Jesus and the Holy Ghost is clearly inspired by this. In a way it is a good idea, when tou have converted people to a new religion by force, to show the that "it's not that different, you can still party when you use to and worship something similar, only sing praise to this instead of that". Persecute those who keep worshiping their old gods, and in time, the subdued will forget the original religion.
