He is sick, true, but not that bad.

how do you think serial killers should be punished?

That's a tough one.

I always feel that any punishment that involves only long-term incarceration is not sufficient enough but the death-penalty is also inadequate as it is only one death in compensation for however many deaths they have committed.

Perhaps the government could institute a punishment wherein the serial killer loses a body part for each victim over a period of time (one body part per week?) until all victims are compensated for, then the death-penalty applied?

do you think there should be a ranking system or criterion for killers?

i see people described as 'serial' killers despite only having a few victims and i think that this detracts from the term when used to describe people like pedro lopez.

perhaps we could say:
. 0-2 victims = murderer
. 2-5 victims = large-scale murderer
. 5+ victims = serial killer

then when they get to milestones like 50 or 100 victims give them some sort of citation, like 'extreme serial killer' or something.
i'm sure it would also help with sentencing and that sort of stuff when the killer was caught (as they almost always are ).

or it might give them a "goal" to work toward, making their massacres that much worse.

a killer is a killer, and it's sick no matter how you slice it.

it's a matter of right to live. by stealing someone else's right to live, it makes your right less of a right and more of a risk.
that and i don't understand anyone who'd want to take someone else's life. what could possibly be gratifying about that?

It's something to do with having the ability to manipulate another human in any way you desire. To be able to inflict pain or touch them however you like and they wont fight back. It's also the curiosity factor (cf. Ed Gein, Edmund Kemper), where a person wants to know what it would be like to touch a dead person, cut somone's arm off, or - in the case of Mr Kemper - 'shoot grandma'.
It is gratifying to indulge this curiosity or desire for power because it makes you feel higher in the hierarchy than your victim, closer to god than human.
There is also something in abusing another human that allows those who themselves have been abused to project the personality of their abuser into their victim and perform some sort of 'payback' for the violence and torment they suffered.

yet they don't comprehend how easily the victim could reverse this superior rank with just a little forewarning of what's to come.
they're nothing more than a bully that throws a sucker punch.
