we're talking about labels here. do you think that labels are created to describe or hide behind? example: if you're a manic depressive and like to cut yourself, do you become goth because that label suits the way you feel or do you choose it because you don't want to deal with your issues and you can hide behind a label that can feed into your problems?
***note: this is not going to turn into a 'what is goth' thread. that was an example, the same could be said about punks, christians, preps... whatever.***

Personally I feel that I describe my label as much as it describes me.
But I respect your intetions of keeping this from becoming a "what is goth" thread so I won't extrapolate.

"Student"...because I don't want to work for little money and it helps to camaflage the fact that I fucked up the first half of my life being a "Tweeker"...wich was brought on by my rejection of the "Jock" scholarship I was offered to run track after highschool wich I passed up because I was way too much of a "goth/stoner/ho" to be caught dead doing anything except partying and wasting my life away being angry at society and the injustice and stupidity of it all that would of been my "punk" stage I think that it's safe to say that now I am just a "Mommy/student/AAAAGHHHHHHH...I don't know what I am anymore!!!!!!!!!!!!! I still dont have a label.
It can work both ways really.People can hide behind labels/stereotypes as an excuse for why people dont like them or why they shouldnt like someone else because of their grouping.Changing to suit that label is another method of hiding.
Adopting a label for a non decriptive reason would be the posers thats I keep hearing about I guess.

if you must use a label i am punk, and no i don't hide behind it 'cause i dont have anything to hide from. but to be honest (and i'm only really speaking about alaska's punks) i do think alot of them hide behind their label because their lazy they don't give a fuck they don't whanna work for anything and most of them not all but most of them are going no where.  that's sad because they could all party have fun and still go some where in life.

I don't have a label, because I'm still trying to figure out what the hell I am. I guess I'll have to take a poll, and post the results when I find out.
I do find that people who literally tell you they are are usually poseurs, or just trying too hard to fit in, or not fit in, as the case may be. But most of us do lean toward certain attitudes, without attaching the label.

Ok, yet once again...
To me, a label is not something I "hide within." A label is something I search for, I try to find a one word description of what I feel, I search and search and search for something that fits one particular aspect of my personality, and then I GRAB it. This way, tomorrow, when I try to describe who I am, it doesn't take 25 hours, it takes a small collection of single words, labels if you will.
I am bipolar, but that's not a label, that's a psychological disorder I suffer from.
I associate with the Gothic subculture. No, I do not fit the Gothic stereotype.
I am currently agnostic, but I am my own brand of agnostic (I am quite religious, but I still don't "know" yet).
I am a determinist, yet this word doesn't begin to delve into my metaphysical theories.
I can continue for ages, giving a rundown of who I am, and still fall short; but the beauty of labels is that they aid in shortening the discussion (I can say agnostic bipolar determinist Romantic Gothic... etc., and cut all of the extra talk, and you have some feeling of who I am. You don't KNOW me, but will you ever?).
