I was thinking of learning how to play. Though I figured I'd see what the internets had to say about their experiences with it, and if this violin seemed like a good deal:

I did the same thing once. I figured, what the fuck, I'm a drummer, bassist and guitarist, and I can read both treble and bass clefs, so perhaps I might be able to play the violin . . .

i wanted to play the cello, but was told my fingers were too short, i don't play any instruments now.

so i say go for it! if you can do it, do it for those of us who had crappy music instructors and cocky, elitist band members.

i played violin for 3 years... lots of emotion in that instrument. i would not recomend buying one if you cant hold it and examine it yourself first...... just a better idea.

So then, what size would you recommend?
I know, part of the reason that sparked the idea to maybe try it.

Firstly you don't buy your instrument online. You need to get measured/sized for the instrument. Secondly, if could come in pieces and you're screwed.

Secondly do you even know the difference between the makes and models of a Violin? Probably not.

Student models are machine made and therefore give you a crap quality of sound. But when you're a beginner, you just need something to get you by.

I just bought my new Viola (because I'm tired of playing my violin) for $3200. It was hand made, and its the second best to a Strad.

Do you know the difference between a Viola and Violin? Do you have a teacher?

I've played the viola for 13 years and the violin for 9. The instruments become an extension of you and your expression.

Do more research- you'll need to be sized, find the right instrument, play it a few times, make sure its right, get the right strings, resin, bow and case. Lets not forget the books shall we. So lets just do some simple math.

Student instrument: $700
Case: $150-400
Bow: $70-1000
Resin: $4-50
Books: $20

Depending on the quality? You'll be looking to dish out a little over $2000.

I express thinking of wanting to learn something new. Not buy a great violin to which I'll rise to fame and make oogles amounts of money. With your apparent deep knowledge of the instrument in question you should have thought back to when you learned your instrument(s), and what drove you to try them. Even if you didn't have a reason to and you were forced to learn you're post speaks for itself; you don't care whether or not I want to learn, just what a poor quality the violin in question is and how much you think someone should spend.

Also, your name is familiar. Whether I saw it on YouTube or eBay it matters not. So why is it familiar to me?

If I wanted the full Playstation 3 quality and performance with the best imaging available I'd dish out about the same. I'm not after the best, I'm just here to play, and if I like it I'll consider getting a better one. That'll be years away.

I think you're a silly person. Why buy or invest time in an instrument that you dont know how to play and even with books, would you know what style is correct?
