The short story...is what that guy above me said. Emo is a genre of music that is, in general, pretty terrible. Somewhere between what passes as alternative music and punk nowadays. Most of these bands, stuff like Taking Back Sunday, Thursday (Even though I like them), and Say Anything spend most of their time complaining, only occasionally wrapping it with real lyrical content. Brand New, Thursday, ALEXISONFIRE (Who was considered strictly metalcore until their newest album), Emery and Fallout Boy are a few emo bands worth listening to. They have a pretty accessible sound.
There's a longer story though and it mostly starts with Ian McKaye. He was in some other band from D.C that isn't really important to emo music, and they broke up, right? That was in 1983. A lot of HarDCore bands broke up around that time, leaving their scene in shambles. In 1985, Ian McKaye and Tesco Vee (And some others I'm sure) organized a "Revolution Summer" where all the of the people who left hardcore music in DC would start new bands, but by now they were mostly all tired of Hardcore (For the reasons that the bands broke up in the first place, increasingly violent shows and the watering down of their DIY ethic. Not to mention that it's boring to play.) so they ended up playing more emotional, structured music. Thus, the term emo. The first emo bands that mattered were Fugazi, Embrace, Rites Of Spring, Grey Matter, and Fire Party, none of which sound like what's called emo today. It's not a new term at all.
