Can anyone here read it? And if so, do you remember how you learned?

I've been giving people violin lessons on and off for the past few years, but all the people I've taught already knew how to read it. So it never came up. But I just got a student who has absolutely NO musical knowledge at all and I don't know what to do.

I learned to read it 8 or 9 years ago, but I don't remember HOW I learned. Do any of you remember how you learned? Can you give me some advice? Because I am at a complete loss here.

I learned back in 6th grade when I took band class... and I also read some books on it.

i don't know how to read sheet music. i just play my guitar. though i was starting to learn how to read sheet music. they starting me off by learning how to read tap first. i didn't understand it. though at least i started to get the idea of it. while i was still having a hard time with it. just start them off with something that you think it would be easy for them to learn from and teach it to them at the kind of pace that they can do it from. without having to rush them. relax and you'll do fine.

i'm like you i can't remember for the life of me how i started reading sheet music..have you tried doing a search, see if you can find something for beginers that you could use to help others!?

Wouldn't it depend on the instrument? Reading sheet music is just a matter of looking at the notes and knowing what they are, then translating that to your instrument isn't it? If you're trying to teach it to a kid, its gonna take a while. I started that shit back in 3rd grade.

I can read both treble and bass clef...and since I'm first and foremost a percussionist, I understand rhythms and percussion sheet music the best.

Straight memory work is how I learned. Just gotta keep going over and over it until it comes naturally. Memory mnemonics are invaluable though. I learned these ones when I was just old enough to reach the keyboard and I've never forgotten.

Treble clef - I figure that's all you are dealing with - all the lines on the treble clef are - E G B D F - "Every good boy deserves fudge."

All the spaces on the treble clef - F A C E - well... Face of course

Order of sharps - F C G D A E B - "Father Charles goes down and ends battle"

Order of flats - B E A D G C F - "Battle ends and down goes Charles' father."

It's very simple. All clefs are positioned in accordance to the note nicknaked "Middle C" which, in case you're a moron, is the C note located (roughly) in the middle of a piano. Everything to the right of that note is written on the treble clef, everything left of it is written on the bass clef.

So, when you have the middle C on a treble clef, it is BELOW the set staff. so, what you have is:

--b-------------
A
--g-------------
F
--e-------------
[d]
[c]--- (middle C)
[b]
[a]---
[g]
[f]---

and so on, and so on, and so on...a staff can go forever, and ever, and ever...both up and down; but, rather than do that, and rather than write every note left of middle C on a treble scale, they made the bass clef:

A
--g---------


So if in the treble you have: Every Good Boy Does Fine, and FACE
in the bass you have: Good Boys Don't Fuck Assholes, and ACE-G
both are connected by the middle C

It takes a while if recall correctly, but after a while it becomes old hat.

I learned sheet music by taking music lessons, and using said sheet music to play music with the instrument that I played.

i can't remember. i could play bass clef on a cello or double bass, but i couldnt tell you the notes i just read them as numbers wierdly enough, like D1 or C or A2/3 or whatever according to how many fingers i used.

percussion i can read, but i got bored of following. i much prefer the free flow approach. but give me a piece i'll learn the rhythm and follow it through section by section by remembering the rhythm. i preferred playing call and response style percussion rather than orchestral. though i have a few times.

i learnt piano for a while but got bored. i never really learnt treble clef. and noone could be bothered to teach me through gcse music, so i just got my grade by doing technical extras and performances and stuff.

I still can't read sheet music; a result of being moved around the world a lot when I was younger. This thread might be helpful to me as well as to your student; I know enough to count up the bars F...A...C...E... etc. but I've never been able to read it quickly as one would a book.

I didn't learn with cde, I learned doh ray mi. I learned before I could read the alphabet, so I don't think it is that complex. I guess there are less "words". Baby steps I guess. Look at easy music and then work very slowly through more complex stuff.

I think reading stuff that you are already familiar with the sound of might help someone recognise what is what.

Piano lessons started when I was 8. Had to do spell checker books and all that crap...you know? It helped, but having to use the knowledge to go alone with the music/song I had to play helped most.

He's learned the basic idea of the notes on both the instrument and the sheet, but he's having trouble connecting them.

I never knew it would be this hard to teach a 16 year old boy to play the violin.

I have no idea how I learned to play the violin, piano, and cymbals. However, I know I just learned it. I miss playing an instrument. I want to go back to playing the violin and piano; even learn how to play the guitar and drums.

Thanks Moo. That first site really helped. That and the guide book to Zelda: Ocarina of Time. He got extremely motivated when he figured out how to play the song on the violin. And they say games are useless....

And I finally figured out when I learned to read it. Everyone in my school district learns to play the Recorder in 4th grade. I forgot about that. Seems my student moved here in 5th grade. So he completely missed it.
