Seriously, why do people like taking pictures? Camera's sell like crazy.
I can't think of anything I'd want to take a picture of that I couldn't create with cheap computer editing skills. I mean, people take pictures and stick them in scrap books and stuff. That's fine. But what about everyone else that just sticks it in a photo album? Why do they need a new camera every two years?
Seriously, why do people take worthless pictures? Why do they bother?

Yeah, I've had a little bit too much free time on my hands.

Fresh air and good memories are all some people really have, and photos help people re-live memories.

Personally, I love photo albums, especially those of total strangers, and you can pick them up from the house clearence blokes for almost nothing sometimes.

That's kind of creepy Nivvie . . . Okay not really but you could be arrested over here for posession of child-pornography if law enforcement caught you with a picture of someone elses kid at bath-time . . . Crazy no? It kind of worries me more that these people see pictures of children going through day-to-day activities as being pornographic even if they are posessed by the parents of that child . . . It doesn't seem right . . .
Anyway, on the original topic. For me, I try to take photographs from an artistic standpoint; so its not about preserving the experiences that I have had but trying to express the way I see things by using photography to encapsulate how something appeared to me in a moment of time; if composed properly, a photograph can express history, an idea, feelings or moods . . . It's a surprisingly versatile and pleasently accesable medium.

i enjoy cameras, but have never had to pay too much for those i own...my husband won a drawing and we now have a brand new sony digital handicam...i guess the gods of vanity have not forsaken me.

my camera phone is great to send pictures of my children to their grandma in alaska, my father has boxes of pictures, and i have a few of my own, it's fun to reminesce, see what people looked like ten years ago, and even more so to compare pictures of your family and self as children, with those of your own children and compare the features...it's wonderful realizing that my blue eyed daughter looks just as i did at four, my oldest daughter looks almost exactly as her father did...and it's sort of humbling when you look at pictures of your parents and realize...girls do turn into their mothers!

some of the things i've seen so far, you can't recreate with anything.

eg: sitting on a pier in the maldives with clear oceans, white sand, palm trees, and a sunset that has every single colour of the rainbow. and i mean, every single colour of the rainbow, watching sharks swim beneath my feet between red snappers and the occasional eagle or sting ray, and more fish i dont even know the name of and havent seen again above the top of a beautiful coral reef wall.

looking down the throat of an 8 foot wing span manta ray as it literally flies up from the other side of a reef structure i was swimming up just as i got to the top of it, the pressure from its movements in the water sending me backwards, spinning and watching it zoom over my body and over my head and swing down the other side of me, behind my head as i spin round to watch it fly down the other side of the reef structure.

looking up at niagra falls from the base of it as the water thunders down crashing and creating the most amazing mist and sound with a force that could crush bones.

having john frusciante play guitar six inches from my face.


there's a few moments i wish i had a camera with me.

because those moments, well, theyre not that easy to explain. and as your memories fade its excellent to look back and remember afresh.

every time you learn something new, you forget something. its the way our brains work.

I'm actually trying to fill a novels worth of short stories. So I'm saving all my good stuff for that.

Should I have one, yes. I'll probably have a few photos, but most likly not. Then again, by the time it gets done (assuming I get one done) I'll probably have 300 photos I'll wish to use in it :S

I do love cameras though...I find it's cheaper to buy them on vacation.....they sell em cheaper elsewhere.

cell phone digi cams are the next big thing

uh, they've been like that for a few years... but we've only just started making phones with decent amounts of storage for HQ photos on. (nokia have a new handset with 4GB of storage on it that i've seen, and samsung are making ones with 8GB.) since flash drive technology is reaching new heights and sizes.

thing is, you still can't beat a real camera. my old man bought one of these a while back, not the greatest but it does well.




tis only 5.4 MP and you can buy cameras up to... well i've seen 12.8 (i think jobe would probably be the guy to say what's out that's astonishing atm)

which is planned to only be released on korea, no camera phone comes close to a real camera in terms of quality. problem is, the optics on the phone are quite inferior in quality to many dedicated digital cameras on the market meaning the picture may be 10MP but the quality may not be as great as even a 8MP digi camera.

If you want to get something good then you want to get (in my opinion and because I like Nikon's) a Nikon D2X (12.4 MP) which is what I'm saving for at the moment...



Thou some people might tell you to go Cannon and get their new 30D (8.2 MP) personally I think it's over-rated



But if you want to go the whole hog, then get a Hassleblad H2D with the 39 Mega Pixel back and be like the Pro's...

The thing to remember here is not the MP, but the quality of the both the Lens and the Image processor. Don't be fooled into thinking that a higher MP gives a better picture as it simpler doesn't, all it does is give a larger image. It's the glass and the chips inside that make for a better image...
