I got my application today. It's bout 30 pages plus 2 essay-type questions and a full medical report.

I'm dying to go, dammit. I hope I get in.

Oh wow....I've always wanted to do that, but my health is bad, and I can't picture getting pneumonia somewhere that they don't even have aspirin, let alone the drugs I would need...

What are the peace corps? THe name sounds a little oxymoronic to me.

Peace Corps: Going into remote jungles (or somesuch) and making life better for the folks that live there, while gaining valuable experience and (I think) getting paid....

Oh, right. Don't you have to have some sort of medical knowledge to participate?

Not that I'm aware of.....I'm sure basic First Aid should suffice; I think knowing a second language also helps (but I'm not entirely sure.)

Well... that's close but not exactly, Mets. You could be building huts in Madagascar or teaching HTML in Uzbekistan. It all depends on what that particular community needs. Some people go and help set up businesses or schools. They do HIV/AIDS awareness and relief. Agriculture... livestock... Just about anything needed to make a society run.

And as for medical care, you get top quality medical care for free. If there's not an American-standard medical facility in the area you're in, they fly you to where there IS one.

You don't get paid. You get a living allowance, which gives you enough money to live on and have the necessities. When you complete the 27 month tour of service, you're given a little over six grand to start over in the States.
