Anyone really ever listend to the song One by Metallica? i mean i read the book Johnny Got his Gun, but this song really puts a sad sense of macabre depression into it. Its such a downer of a song, but very powerful.
seen the video? i want to see the movie that the clips belong to...dude gets blown apart in war and the whole movie is people that come see him and talk to him, and his tormented thoughts of realizing his mind was fine but he was a functionaless human with no communication and freedom...he was a head---nice...
"I took my place in the midst of the world, and I appeared to them in flesh. I found all of them intoxicated; I found none of them thirsty. And my soul became afflicted for the sons of men, because they are blind in their hearts and do not have sight; for empty they came into the world, and empty too they seek to leave the world. But for the moment they are intoxicated. When they shake off their wine, then they will repent." --jesus quoted in Judas Didymos Thomas
"And Jesus said unto them, 'And whom do you say that I am?'
They replied, 'You are the eschatological manifestation of the ground of our being, the ontological foundation of the context of our very selfhood revealed.'
And Jesus replied, 'What?!?'"

well not, he loses his arms legs hearing and sight in a WW2 from being hit by a bomb, and the entire thing is him strugglng to create a new world inside of this darkness. Midway through the book he figures out that he isnt really alone and starts to tap out SOS in mores with his head on his pillow. it takes like a few years for the doctors to notice. When they do they talk back with him its like a major breakthrough in the book, and he wants to die, but they just inject him with drugs and thats pretty much the way it ends. its depressing as all hell. But mos tof the book is just his memories with flashes to the present.
i serious think anyone who wants a STRONG anti war book get Johnny got his gun by Dalton Trumbull or however its spelled, because it is a masterpiece.
The book is excellent. The film is also very well done. The film was directed by Dalton Trumbo (the writer) himself, and is therefore his vision of what it should look like. SOK is right however, its horrible and leaves you feeling very sad, and almost... ashamed to be a part of this "civilized" human race.
Also, Metallica did a very good job of bringing that feeling out with their song. The video is, in my opinion, the best video ever recorded. Oh, how the mighty have fallen...
When people talk of the freedom of writing, speaking or thinking I cannot choose but laugh. No such thing ever existed. No such thing now exists; but I hope it will exist. But it must be hundreds of years after you and I shall write and speak no more.
