oh blast it all! today was the induction to the Handley High School National Honors Society and I had to watch it all from the bleachers. all of those plastic cheerleaders and alpha males who couldn't have a deep feeling if they ate it and shat it out were wearing robes and lighting candles proclaiming that they were smarter than ME!
I remember my rejection from the Honors Society some 3 weeks ago. my Gpa was a point too low for me to quality because I took challenging and time consuming classes like creative writing, drama and art! meanwhile, the less worthy skated by on shop and home ec. classes while i was the one trying to better myself; oh the injustice!
with stiff resolve i planned to sit through the ceremony of these plastic people receiving their token pat on the back. they would get theirs, graduation would come and they would be shuffled off to degree mill state colleges or have some shitty factory jobs because their intellects did not have an iota of what this hellhole high school pretends they have.
i would be.... indifferent.
but then the precession started, and the students began filing through the auditorium, bearing candles, and... Mozart was playing. it was pachebel cannon no. 5, and the overwhelming beauty of it simply overwhelmed me! this fine piece of music which none of these shallow morons could recognize was being associated, in the eyes of all, with those who could never approach appreciation for it. the justaposition of that beautiful music with that circus act of injustice was too much to bear. i fled the auditorium and spent the rest of the afternoon in the bathroom, pretending to defecate.
have any of you had to deal with such an injustice? please, tell me that i'm not as alone as i think i am. To view links or images in signatures your post count must be 10 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

hello,
i gather you're new here. we always love fresh points of view, and we're certainly glad to have you. however, i must admit i find your attitude troubling. hmmm...
we've all been denied honors, prizes, etc. we wanted and believed we deserved. that's normal, and it's normal that you're disappointed. however, i strongly encourage you to focus your energies towards better ends. the phrase "sour grapes" comes to mind.
you should not pretend all who were inducted were so undeserving. moreover, the people evaluating you can't hope to fully understand every situation, so looking at the gpa is the easiest way to go. surely you admit this is a good approximation of academic success, at the very least? academic success is only moderately correlated with real intelligence anyway.
what bothers me most is your condescension. you seem very full of yourself, from this post. whether this is the case or not is irrelevant - first impressions are a big part of how people see you. and as much as we may want to, we have to live with other people whether we like it or not. nobody likes an ass.
i hope this little rant of mine had some effect on you. rarely do i take anything i read on these forums to be personal. however, i think i'm sensing in you something i once saw in myself. i was in ib, nhs, and every academic team and club at my high. i had over a 5.0 gpa. however, i was unable to finish the last year of high school in the united states and had to leave all my academic success behind. i had around a 3.0 gpa my senior year, had no extracurricular activities and could not take any AP exams. how would that make you feel? i've since come to realize that all those things don't matter. many people are smarter than me, and i am smarter than many other people.
i don't feel like elaborating a grand theory of universal understanding at the moment, i just wanted to suggest you worry about yourself and not think so poorly of others. Usually an honors student would at the very least be able to spell "juxtaposition". At most I would give you high marks for using it correctly within a sentence. If you want challengeing take Calculus or something. Creative writing and Drama are brush off classes that people take because no matter what if you tell the teacher you "tried" you still get an A.

and your going to go on after high school and do what? continue to rant every time something unfair happens, continue to be 'misinterpreted' by the world, (and as Synikul puts it) and one day wake up with bad hair and an overwhelming urge to wear a black trench coat? Shit happens, life's unfair, get over it.
and no your no alone. although all through high school i had 3.7/3.9 and was involved with every group i could possibly cram into my schedule i didn't even get nominated until my last year. shoot, i watched girls who i knew fucked their way to A's (we just had our 5th teacher in 4 years fired for sleeping with students. The latest one from Pennsylvania, Coach Z, was my senior year coach. eew) light those candles and take that oath.
sickening i say. | |

I don't quite understand the "injustice". If the rules of the group require a certain GPA and you didn't achieve it, then you can't join. The rule might be a bad one but it doesn't seem like anyone did something bad to you. You seem to value education for its own rewards-you took classes that you found a challenge and you love music-why does joining that group mean so much to you? Joining or not will have little effect on your career or life, so why care?

I just read this entire post... and it floored me at how utterly absurd you are. Not only do you pretend (pretentiously I might add) that youre some sort of scholar, but you are screamingly arrogant. Let me puncture your fantasy a bit, you're not nearly as intelligent as you pretend to be. As far as jobs and degrees go, ha, its who you know...not what you know. I dropped out of a medicore state school because it bored me. Now I have schmucks who graduated with honors from Yale working under me. And I barely even show up to work these days because its so boring.
I can smell the pretension in you like garlic from a chefs pores. I dont know WHO you are or WHAT you think you are, but a brilliant, indiffernt scholar you are not. To ASSUME that because "plastic" people (plastic I assume meaning attractive physically) dont appreciate some mediocre Mozart piece is just ridiculous. I am even sure most of them (including you) dont appreciate it for what it is, but not because theyre plastic/normalgoodlooking or because youre pretentious, but because youre all a bunch of dumbshit highschool kids.

these replies, they have missed the point completely at what i was trying to broach to you, my trusting friends.
is it a crime in this society to FEEL? i assure you, what i posted was arrogant, it was snotty, it was self righteous, but it was TRUE! i regret nothing.
it reminds me of the two mindsets we who are elevated above the rabble have as compared to those in Plato's cave of shadows.
those who perceive society's shadows as reality, unwilling to step out into the burning light of the real world have a worldview inline with that of john milton as he wrote paradise lost. in paradise lost, satan's greatest crime of unrepentant pride is punished by an eternity in hell. those who share the judeo christian viewpoint invariably seek to punish pride whenever they feel it is a threat to their god who does nothing for them.
those, such as i, who have unlocked the powers of our own intellects through literature see the world in a mutually exclusive light: we reach the depths of our souls through pride and we are not ashamed, for it is pride that puts the very stars within our reach.
an example is Goethe's Faust (NOT Marlowe's!). when Faust sells his soul to Mephistopheles, he wagers that he can never be satisfied and that his infinite pride could encompass infinity. Faust travels the world, returns to Greece in the classical era, marries helen ot troy, and founds his own kingdom by the sea. in his old age, Faust is overwhelmed by all of his accomplishments, becomes satisfied, and loses the deal.
as the devils drag him down to hell, the angles of God intervene and bring him up to heaven, proclaiming that only through his pride could he have bettered his soul such as he did.
say what you will, my friends, but I for one will go the way of pride and see where it takes me! and i shall never be ashamed... exeunt To view links or images in signatures your post count must be 10 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

haha, if your first post troubled me, the second just pisses me off. let me hit your points one by one. this will probably be a long post because i want you to understand why it's you who've missed the point. and i wager others will treat you worse later on.
nobody denies you your right to feel. that's something you should take care of yourself; being so familiar with plato, you should be familiar with the trouble passions can cause. you aren't a cold intellectual, as both your posts have made glaringly obvious. if you want to be well loved by anyone, you have to know how to get along with people. don't pretend you can come here, be self-righteous and arrogant and make friends with us. do you see the logical fallacy there?
don't pretend others are so different from yourself. is it the fault of those who are lesser than you that they're that way? do you hate a dog for being a dog?
i certainly hope you're not trying to undermine john milton's paradise lost. if you are, all i can tell you is that you have no right to do so. milton understood human nature, and his work reveals that. judge not lest ye be judged.
your discourse on pride is laughable. i am a practicing satanist and amateur philosopher and believe i have a very deep understanding of pride. not all pride is good, youngwerther. pride is to you what religion is to those you say you despise: it's not ignorance, it's stupidity.
do you know what the difference between couage and audacity is? you can back courage up. you are audacious.
and i'm curious why you use the word exeunt? could you please explain that to me? O divine art of subtlety and secrecy! Through you ... we can hold the enemy's fate in our hands. - Sun Tzu, The Art of War Better to reign in Hell, than serve in Heav'n. - Satan, Paradise Lost Rules to live by, rules to die by, rules to go to heaven or hell by.
