When it comes to ringtones, there are two distinct schools of thought. One: Annoy at all costs. The other: Silence is golden. But now there's a new breed of ringtone that is both inconspicuous and irritating. The kids love it, the adults hate it, and searches for it are ringing off the hook.
This new tone, appropriately named the mosquito, uses a pitch only the young can hear (most of the time). You needn't be Bart Simpson to realize the potential for classroom mischief. Not since the advent of the watch-calculator has the sanity of our nation's educators been in such peril.
Queries on "download mosquito ringtone" buzzed into our top 300 searches. Strangely enough, only 14% of searches came from kids 17 and under. The majority of queries, it appears, come from freaked-out parents or old fogies in denial about their hearing loss.

Some students are downloading a ring tone off the Internet that is too high-pitched to be heard by most adults. With it, high schoolers can receive text message alerts on their cell phones without the teacher knowing.
As people age, many develop what's known as aging ear -- a loss of the ability to hear higher-frequency sounds.
The ring tone is a spin-off of technology that was originally meant to repel teenagers -- not help them. A Welsh security company developed the tone to help shopkeepers disperse young people loitering in front of their stores while leaving adults unaffected. The company called their product the "Mosquito."
Donna Lewis, a teacher in Manhattan, says her colleague played the ring for a classroom of first-graders -- and all of them could hear it, while the adults couldn't hear anything.
It IS slightly annoying. I have yet to try it on older people, though.
Do you have a pet? See how they react to it. Everytime I play it, my cat tries to find the "bug" around my monitor. It's funny.
