FORT BELVOIR, Virginia (AP)--The U.S. Army is considering a proposal to allow a private developer to build a military theme park that would include "4D" rides and bars including a "1st Division Lounge."
Military officials said a massive entertainment and hotel complex built next to a national Army museum could draw more than 1 million people a year. But authorities in Fairfax County, Virginia, are objecting because of already traffic-clogged roads surrounding the proposed site.
Universal City Property Management III, of Orlando, Florida, submitted the unsolicited proposal for the theme park last year.
"You can command the latest M-1 tank, feel the rush of a paratrooper freefall, fly a Cobra Gunship or defend your B-17 as a waist gunner," according to the proposal, which was obtained by The Washington Post.
County officials have no authority over the Army's decision because the site is federal property. County Supervisor T. Dana Kauffman said he thought the entertainment concept died last year and said he had no interest in turning a military museum into "Disney on Rolling Road."
But the Army notified the county last week it is planning to move the military museum from Fort Belvoir to a site a few miles away that would be large enough for the entertainment complex.
The Washington Post reported that the Army is considering the entertainment venue to help offset the cost of the $300 million museum, which a spokesman said is scheduled to open in 2013.

Not really. Makes quite a bit of sense to me. With the type of attractions they're offering, this could be a potential cash COW for the military, thus further funding future (and current) endeavors.
You have to weigh the initial investment vs the projected gains, and determine how attractive the profitability is here. To view links or images in signatures your post count must be 10 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

I think they decided this idea was no good and theyre not doing it. I live in Northern Virginia and they dismissed the idea pretty quickly. As they should have.

Until there is that need however, and we remain an all volunteer military I see no need. We have ample troops over there, as seen by the fact that they recently reduced some of them as the iraqi Defense forces begin to take over.

Remember rumors in high school? If you were a smart kid you could float a rumor of an idea and pretty soon very few know who started it (especially if you had someone do it for you) It's not even important if te idea was serious or not-if you get a wholely positive response and go through with it, great... But sometimes it's not even true. It's a social response marker-like a "pinging" with sonar, except to gauge public response. If you were wanting to use more agressive recruiting, you could, for example-Float a rumor about one of the more extreme means, and, if it meets with little resistance do something inbetween and more agressive than current, but not near to the extent of the rumor...then you know you will probobly get hardly any resistance and more support. Not saying that's what happened, just that it happens alot. Popular opinion is a part of my job...

Yes, why should they have?
I don't think it would be a park like a "fun"park and cottoncandy etc.
There are other museum like parks around, like Colonial Williamsburg or Seapark, that kind of thing.
I also don't think it would be to glorify war, but the intent would be to preserve the history and heritage of the Army.
To tell the story of the generations that came before you and the sacrifice they made so that there is freedom today.
Kids these days need more historical knowledge (imho) and maybe this will be a good interactive way of doing that for this bit of your national history.
I don't see why this should be a bad thing perse. "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated." - Mahatma Ghandi

For this "Military Theme Park" they should have some fun obstacles. I went on the "Slide For Life" at Camp Mcall (Ranger obstacle course) Ft. Bragg Nc 100 ft tall zipline over water until it gets down to the surface you get going reall fast... It was great...

I thought about joining the Army after college, but, among much more important reasons, I decided not to b/c of having to eat bugs during bivouac training. Is that really a requirement, Necrotic?
My main reason for not enlisting was not wanting to be stuck at the bottom of such a huge hierarchy. Any thoughts?

You can never start the brainwashing too young and war, apparently, can never be too promoted as fun. Maybe I DO wanna be a french fry!
