Psyko and i have been considering a shelter dog. and we both rather like white boxers, despite the shedding of white fur on black clothes.
well, ive found a lovely white boxer male available for adoption locally, but theres just one issue.
hes deaf.
i think he deserves a good home, just as most any animal does, but deaf dogs have a much lower adoption rate because they take more effort and patience to train.
ive read alot about sign language training for deaf dogs and i think he may benefit from it...
what do you think? should i give it a try? once i adopt i cant give him back, i mean yeah technically i can but i dont think its fair to the animal to give it up because its too hard to train or requires extra effort.
i tihnk it will be a lot of effort. simply because of the deafness. make sure he is a good nature etc though first. i have heared that deaf dogs can have an attitude a little more often than dogs that are not deaf. also it being a rescue center / shelter then careful of the dogs background... etc blar blar...
is there a local training place for deaf dogs there? not that they train the dogs... they train you into how to train the dog. as a deaf dog will need special requirments. is he as deaf as a post? or just old man deaf (i.e. "your round now isnt it?".... "oh thanks, ill have a pint").... but a lot to consider, if you can put the effort in and give the dog the patience s/he will likley need, then it will be worth while
hes young. just a year or 2...and was born deaf actually.
i dont know of any training places for deaf dogs tho. im sure i could locate one or an instructor anyway. hes a lovely boy. they say he has a lovely attitude and gets along with cats! however he doesnt get along with other dogs so well. which is fine by me since i cant handle more than one dog.
ermm.... not sure what i was writing now.... another customer rang through and now ive forgotten... grrrr.... but from the above link, doesnt seem to be much more work than a dog that can hear.
esencially the dog is pretty much still puppyish and shouldnt be that hard to train him i dont think. old dogs can learn new tricks contary to the good ol'saying.
just remember to buy hiom a pair of slippers... its either that or your shoes or the furniture!
thats what i was talking about with sign language! thats very helpful thanx!
id rather buy a dog appropriate chew toys instead of slippers, because what would happen if i were to buy myself a pair of slippers? he would chew them
ahhh... well he has his own. and gets told no for other slippers. my mum has not long got a puppy and he has his own pair (an old pair that he adopted) and he doesnt touch the others.
we had a german shepard years ago when i was yonger and she had her own leather shoes. it was those or ours. she had a thing for leather. leads, shoes, coats, fathers calculator (in its own leather case), watch straps etc.
