here's a funny story ..my mom called up the airport to bitch to them about an empoyee who was rude with her and when they asked for a discription all she could say was that he was "Oriental" ..i started laughing because it sounded so racist.

Oriental seems to be considered that yes! Asian though comprises of quite a few nationalities whereas I think before "Oriental" was generally associated with Chinese and Japanese etc. I could be wrong of course!

But what I find interesting is the fact that "Oriental" is considered derogatory when referring to an individual, yet you get shops owned by say Chinese called "Oriental Warehouse". A bit odd.. or not!

We have a huge "mall" type thing called the Oriental Plaza, which stocks anything Indian, from spices to saris.
Perhaps when used to describe inanimate objects and food related items "Oriental" is acceptable!
