| Harry Potter, Good reading? -
10-28-05
I'm not sure if this belongs in Stories or Ontopic discussion, but either way. I can't decide if Harry Potter is good fantasy, or easy reading. I think it's good fantasy, but, then again, it does seem like people just fly through the book...
Opinions please. To view links or images in signatures your post count must be 10 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

id say its good fantasy. im a fairly high level reader so when i need a break from in depth stuff i read HP. and ive read all the books a few times.
i think theyre pretty well thought out and well written. some books feel rushed compared to others but all in all, not bad. quit your fucking whining.

Fantasy describes setting and easy reading describes the writing style. I don't see why it's a one or the other situation. When people talk of the freedom of writing, speaking or thinking I cannot choose but laugh. No such thing ever existed. No such thing now exists; but I hope it will exist. But it must be hundreds of years after you and I shall write and speak no more.

| It's a play on words. Fantasy tends to be easy reading because the concepts are usually (from what I can tell, at least) easy to grasp, and don't take five minutes to figure out what just happend. Easy reading in short.
Where as easy reading, to me at least, implies the same. The disscusion however, is to define wether or not HP is 'easy reading' or 'fantasy thats just so good it seems like easy reading'. Quote: |

| I've read them all a few times as well. Exluding 4,5, and 6. *hasn't read 6 yet* To view links or images in signatures your post count must be 10 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

I can't make myself get into Harry Potter. I'm an avid fantasy fan, but I like stories where I can bond with the characters or can indentify with the characters. I don't feel that with Harry Potter. I've spoiled myself with the likes of DragonLance and Death Gate Cycle. In Memory of the Busby Babes :

These books are a mind control plot by the New World Order, do not get sucked into their scheme.

Harry Potter is the kind of book that was sadly lacking in my childhood. It's an easy read, the plot is awesome, and yes - I do own the t-shirt, the DVD's, the magical goblet, the stickers, the paintbook, the personal organiser, and several games.
I think people need to stop analysing whether or not it's cool to like it, and just take it for what it is - good old fashioned fairy tale stuff.

| Actually, the reason I haven't read it yet is because it's an exspensive book, and I'd probably first be getting my hands on it now from the library. So I said screw it, I can wait for it to come to half price books by me. Which I saw, but didn't pick up becuase of the lack of dollor bills.
Since I enjoy reading the books, I like to take my time, enjoy every sentance and tense moment like a drop of wine. So I'm not so eager to read HP6, just because that only leaves one book left, and that so happens to be the last one. Which means I won't be able to read anything new from Harry Potter and his geeky freinds. Quote:

| THAT, is the American dream. Yeesh, is the word. I don't like analizing books. Looks like some sort of Bible cult that finished the good book and needed something else. Quote: |

| That's sad, but I can appreciate the fact for identifying with the characters. Books are fuller with flavor when you can dig into the mind of the characters. Unlike HP, where you can finally figure out what HP is thinking in books 3 and up, whereas in 1-2, it's like "Monster? Um... I'd kill it. But Hp, I bet he'd take it out shopping." I can't like a bunch of snotty kids casting spells. Give me dragons, mages, sword-fights, bitchy elves, and wizards named Zifnab.

That's all fine and dandy. But while most kids were reading Hansel and Gretel, I was reading Shadowlight. Happily-ever-after doesn't do it for me. Glass towers and charming monarchs and talking amphibians have never caught and held my interest. So if your Harry Potter is a good old-fashioned fairy tale, that explains my severe dislike. | DVD's? Sickers? PAINTBOOK??? That's it, I declare you the forum Potter-head. All I's got is the books (HC, obviously) and the PC game (which I thought sucked. The mouse is too hard to control for me when it comes to games like 'Tracing to learn a spell'). Quote: |

| Neither can I, but I suppose I developed that opinion after I read the first two. So now I like the books, while I secretly hate them... Or something to that extent. It's like kids solving Sherlock Holmes mysteries. It's not possible. Quote: |

| I prefer them all except the Zifnab. I like easy to pronouce words, and words that make sense. Which is why I've wanted to, but never have tried, R.A. Salvatore's books. Which I'm sure you've at least read one of likeing the hole bitchy elves and Zifnab's. He's supposed to be really good, exspeically with... uh... I think it's called RETURN OF THE WITCH KING for the Forgotten Realms coming out right after that big fat sequal he did with Drizzt'. You think Drizzt is easier to pronounce than Zifnab? Zif-nab. How difficult is that?

it isn't an old fashioned fairy tale- and I'd have to say it's very very far from being a fairy-tale.
But then see it as you like- it differs from each person.
