I pulled out of my drive and saw a cat laying in the road. On first glance I thought it was my Molly, but I knew it couldn't have been as I'd just left her in the house minutes earlier, telling her off for being naughty.

Got out the car, and it was obvious the poor thing was dead, half it's head was missing and it's eyeball was out of the socket on the other side..

Anyway, I picked her up, put her in a box and drove to the vets to see if she might have a chip to identify her (no collar) she didn't. I left her there to be cremated.

My point is, I know a lot of people don't like cats - but someone tonight is going to go home expecting Tibbles to be home for tea.. it might be a little kid, and old lady, or maybe just someone like me who absolutely adores their pets, and Tibbles isn't going to show.

Why can't people just be a little more considerate? OK, cats do get killed on the roads all the time, but please at least have the decency to move them, or take them to a vet to see if they can be identified. The worst thing about losing a pet is not knowing... you keep a tiny glimmer of hope alive.. Far better to find out of their demise (although that's gut wrenching too) and be able to grieve.

I would have hated to find one of my cats in that sort of state.

yup. watched a kid burst into tears after his dog got run over by a dump truck.

I cried when I was younger and my rat died. It had internal bleeding and I swear it was from where my brother threw it as hard as he could at the mattress to watch it bounce.

I do think it's important for kids to have pets though, no matter how hard it is when you lose them.. I think it's a way to learn how to look after and care for things, and also a way to learn how to cope with death.

I had a pet cat for 5 years. I got Pennie for my tenth birthday and she was adorable. My mother loved her and she was like this little ball of fluff when she was a kitten. I had her for 5 years then one morning, she didn't show up at my doorstep. I put out flyers around my town and put up missing posters in shop windows, I even asked the landlords at the local bars if they would put up a few missing posters for me.

About 2 weeks went by and I was hoping that someone took her in and that she was being fed and looked after. (she was a long haired cat and she needed brushing every 2 days.) I was at the top of my street waiting for a bus when one of the local 'catchgate posse' started laughing at me. I looked at him and asked him what the fuck his problem was and he had a poster that I handed out in his hand. He was gloating at me and told me that he shot Pennie and fed her to his ferrets so I kicked is fucking face in all over catchgate front street.

I was heartbroken for months. I just don't get how anyone could harm a timmid cat who never did anything to anyone. Makes me fucking sick.

yeah, it was sad having to tell my 5yo his cat died... he went and threw away the cat food.

sorry to hear that. it's heartbreaking to see a cat or dog near death or dead.i love all animals and if i see one in that shape i at least call the animal shelter to pick it up.

We always put on lavish funerals.
We found a dead mole the other day, she wanted to put on a big ceremony for that too. It helps them when they can say goodbye. We lost a pet a few months back and it was diseased so the vet cremated it, so we buried some pictured of him and his food bowl.

I can honestly say I've been more upset over the death of certain pets than I have certain family members.

Yea Neen, that is fucking awful. I hope they all fucking die for doing that. I'm not one for getting into debates, but when it comes to animal cruelty I would kill rather than back down.

As Nivvie says, I would certainly chose animals over some of the people I know, and I'd certainly shed more tears.

A time ago there was a video roaming around the internet about two bulgarian or russian (whatever) teenager putting a cat in a cage and burned it alive.

No.. Don't want to either. People like that, who thrive on that kind of stuff, find it 'cool' should rot in hell. I have no tolerance for that.

i have grieved at all the deaths of any pets that i have own, but the death of one's child, someone you gave birth to, is the greatest grief ever imaginable.
