| Empty-V...Behavioral Cues for America's Consumer Culture? -
06-14-02
does it bother anyone else that when a person has an idea, a talent, charisma, something... that they are automatically expected to turn a profit with that "something"?
we are so conditioned to go along with the values of consumer culture...it makes me wonder why more people don't question/challange it. it's difficult, i know...the system(and subsequently the daily round of life/existence in this country) is set up to make opposing it seem absurd and futile. when i turn on mtv, it makes me sad to see the most superficial shit(the "rewards" of being greedy, shallow, proficient bread winner, etc) being exaulted by young people. maybe it's the chiken & the egg theory, i dunno. but the huge cultural "thing" that is mtv, is diseased, and poisons the young by feeding/instilling in them the values of corporate america...the very power structure that benefits from a brainwashed population. you NEED the right looks, the right car, the right job, the right friends, etc...and questioning any of it is for the losers...cuz how could anyone NOT want to be one of the winner's? get it? it's like living in this pathetic shopping mallsoleum culture, and mtv capitalizes on the (unrealized?) anger in the young, and turns it into another lifeless, voiceless comodity. fuck empty-v. glad i'm a loser.
man, i could go on & on...but what are your thoughts?

well, if it was, whatever. i get a bit defensive sometimes.
sometimes when there's an attempt at any substantive discussion on a forum, a blow hard(usually a guy who just wants sex topics & titillation)will be quick to jump in with the "just shut the fuck up" alpha male routine. but i'm new here & don't know anyone...so maybe it was a miscue on my part. i understand what you mean. there are, however, many differences between the inate sense of wanting to be the best person/human being a person can, and the adulterated sense of "winner" that is imposed on individuals through their environment. it's the values...the sense of attaining the best a person can be, that's imposed by consumer culture that i find empty. if that makes sense to ya.
i just try to keep it in balance for myself; i mean, i hypocritically embrace alot of the things in our culture, or parts of it, anyway, that i have strong opinions against. and i'm not saying that we'd be that much better off if we still lived in caves...everything has a trade off. but the way our culture mindlessly dwells on the superficial, and denies the inner(spirituality, philosophy, whatever tag you care to hang on it)is very destructive. mtv is just one of many symptoms of that. it conditions the young & impressionable...much the same way religion does ~ get em while they're young!

you don't have to talk to me about superficial, i live in california which i think is one of the most superficial states, but then again i subscribe to most of those characteristics. the difference is that after i'm done putting an entire paycheck into my car, working out at the gym and getting a tan, i've still got my head screwed on tight enough to be a fucking realist. i don't think it's as easy as saying 'mtv is ruining society' because mtv is a product of society. their position is to make money off of what the people want. if they were selling what society considered dog shit, then they'd be out of business right now. i'm (obviously) not saying that mtv is ruining society, period.
it's a symptom. and one that perpetuates what we have been conditioned(imposed values)to want.
and imo, they are selling shit. and i'm not buying. which apparently puts me in a minority.
an imposed value remains just that, regardless of how people may come to accept it, derive pleasure from it, and see it as their own.
