Everyone knows that slavery was only a small part of the basis for the Civil War. It was only a part because of the economic importance of the cotton industry, one that couldn't have survived the way it did (which provided the northern states with a valuable commodity) without slavery. Furthermore, only a small percentage of people down here owned slaves. I, myself, am descended from sharecroppers.. the next step up from being an indentured servant. This person's rant is as ridiculous and biased as any KKK speech I've ever heard.
I'm betting the writer is also ignorant that Lincoln had no intention of allowing blacks to enter society with equality. Lincoln was what was known as a "colonist" at the time. The "colonists" wanted the blacks to be free, and GONE. Lincoln started shipping them back to Africa after the war, but that program died when he died. It was never a moral crusade for the North, but people like to think it was.
The South seceded from the Union. They were their own country. Therefore, the "North" illegally invaded another country, ran by a different government.
"In comparison to Douglas, Lincoln's views, while not acceptable by today's standards, were far more advanced. At least in the beginning of his political career, Lincoln did not believe that blacks were his full equals and initially favored shipping freed slaves to Central America or Africa. However, he also said that the "institution of slavery is founded upon both injustice and bad policy," and "I have always hated slavery." In 1859, he said that "those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves." "
You should know by now that I'm way too lazy to search for a link to back up what I say. I've read it from multiple sources, I've seen History Channel documentaries on it. I pick up random facts as I drift through life, and I use them wherever appropriate.
Are you accusing me of deliberately lying to you? That would be a fucking insult, and I hope I have more credibility around here than that. If you're saying I'm wrong, or mistaken, that's completely different. I wouldn't deliberately post information I know to be false in a discussion.
I just cited. Not to mention you learn it in high school history class. I <3 you, Synikul.
I didn't learn it in High School history, and I remember because that was one of my favorite classes. Maybe they teach that in the South, but not in the North. All I learned about Lincoln in school was the happy-happy-nice spin that we went to war to end slavery.

No, I was asking for a cite. Thank you, Wicked Lady.
Although one of Synikuls assertations wasn't backed up anyway. It seems abolition of slavery was a bit of a moral crusade for Lincoln (at the least, if not the North more generally), that was the bit I wanted some background information on, since everything I'd read said it was a moral issue for Lincoln.
Thanks. Find out exactly what to think, next.

In southern states Florida is not really Southern. Like we are in the south by some mistake or depending on the person "the grace of God". My northern husband says Florida is the tropical bastard child of the US.
Wise words considering if you attempt say Minnesota is part of the North he covers his ears and screams.
I say we stick Minnestoa and West Virgina together as a completely different section of the U.S.
Hell maybe we should do that to a bunch of the states who have a problem with other states.
After all Texas wants to believe it's it own damn country.
