Well, I won't be posting from work so often for quite a while now. My company just sent out a re-notification of their internet usage policies and I'm sure some of you can guess what that means. People are in trouble and as I have no desire to become one of those people, I'd better be a little more responsible online. I'm going to make an attempt to drastically reduce the amount of time I'm socializing online.

I always rationalized it by telling myself that while I do socialize online, I have very little socializing in the office, as compared to the average employee. But of course, we shouldn't be socializing at all, and doing so in an electronic (and recordable) means isn't very logical.

Anyways, instead of your average "see you less often" post, why don't we discuss the pros and cons of internet socialization. How do you think companies should address the issue of free internet for their employees? They have a right to be complete nazis about internet access, but does it hurt productivity in the end? Is porngraphic access at work as large of a problem as people make it out to be? Do you know anyone who looks at porn at work? What's your take?

i'm too busy while i'm working to really be able to pay much attention to anything going on in here so i only visit in my lunch-hour.





but i think a company that pays for an internet connection and the wages of the person using the pc has the right to say whether or not they can use it for personal stuff or not. i'm easy either way.

They have a right to say how, if, and when their employees use the internet, but if I were an employer I think I'd allow employees personal use of the internet while at work so long as it did not affect their job productivity. Perhaps have weekly evaluations - such as a manager listening in and grading an employee if it were a call center situation.... something like that.

Besides, where I work, they pretty much have to give us free reign over our internet usage...

Being a web designer my web usage is justified, but out of respect I intend to use it more productively, at least for a while. But I do get all of my work done, on time, and I think I do a pretty damn good job...

I doubt I'm at any risk, I think complaints usually lead to being fired for this sort of thing. But I'll respect their wishes... to a degree...
