why is there a $50 coin made from silver recovered under the rumble of the towers? is it really necessary to make money off of tragedy? if it is in memory of the disaster, shouldn't the proceeds go to families involved?

I think the Freedom Tower is something they're building in the place where the WTC towers went down.

I agree with all of the sentiments expressed thus far, but that's how America works, how she functions. Kind of... heartless, but it's more important to keep your own heart and soul about you than to crusade for others to do the same.

See, I don't think any of this would ever happen in Europe. Over there, they know that shit happens and you have to just pick up the pieces and keep on walking, rather than linger on it for so long like we have.

Think about it, would they ever release a gold coin commemorating all those that died in concentration camps with gold they recovered from the Nazis?

In Europe we never received a coin in commemoration of what the Nazi's did. We saw video's of the Belson Camp at the age of 11, and that brought home the terrible things that had occured. A commemorative coin, in my opinion, is patronising to people's feelings.

Thats what I'm saying, in America we get so hopped up on patriotism and pride that we'll buy whatever they shove in our faces that are even vaguely symbolic of what had happened.

This country is dedicated to the principals of capitolisim and every man for himself. That's part of why we have such problems. It's so deeply rooted in our fellow countrymen that it's something that it's not going to to just "go away." I really wish it would, however. Then again I'm not the greatest fan of capitolisim so go figure.

i agree very much with the europe / america thing.

ie- giant film about the bombing of one single harbour,

pretty much sweet F.A. about pretty much every city in the uk, and many other european countries being bombed to rubble, countries brought to their knees, the development of so much technology, coding, rationing, special projects,

(insert comment about the bullshit movie called U-571 and the enigma machine - i live a few miles away from the camp in which they built the first computer and spent a very long time cracking the codes of the enigma machine)

mostly what we have are memorials, stone buildings with plaques on them with names, and once a year, on the 11th of the 11th, a parade for the veterans, and a minutes silence to reflect. with poppies being sold and worn in aid of veteran charities to support the familes and individuals affected over the years of the wars.

but hell, that's just the way we are. bombs go off nearly every day in london, they have always done so. spose its just the stiff upper lip.
