What was that magickal drink that Mina was drinking in Bram Stoker's Dracula? It was Absinthe. It has been banned from this country and many others due to the fact that it causes hallucinations. Not to mention that wormwood is a poison. I've made this drink and haven't suffered any hallucinations. But then again, I don't drink much. Also, not much wormwood is put into this drink. It hasn't made me sick, but I can't speak for everybody. If you are concerned about the wormwood, don't add it.

Ingredients:

1 pint vodka
2 tsp. crumbled wormwood (dried)
2 tsp. anise seed
1/2 tsp. fennel seed
4 cardamom pods
1 tsp. marjoram
1/2 tsp. ground coriander
2 tsp. chopped angelica root
1 2/3 cups sugar syrup


Preparation:

Place vodka in a large jar with a tight fitting lid. Add wormwood and shake well; steep for 48 hours and strain out. Crush seeds and pods in mortar. Add them and all remaining herbs to vodka and steep in a warm place for 1 week. Filter and sweeten. Pour into a bottle and enjoy a piece of history.

Suggestion:

Pour a half glass of water into a half glass of Absinthe for authenticity.

Note: This drink will be very bitter even with the sugar syrup in it. Wormwood is a bitter herb. And unlike the movie, this drink will not be green. It will be brown.

A person would have to eat about a half a pound of wormwood oil to kill themselves, so what little that is in absinthe is nothing to worry about..

and there is a bit more to making absinthe than just putting herbs into vodka..

The green in Absinthe comes from the chlorophyll process during the distilling.
And some other brands will use artificial coloring to get a green tint, allso some of the brands around the turn of the century before it was banned would use zinc to color it... not a veary healthy thing to do...

The recipe above, is really more an alcoholic drink than anything else. If you want a real, but bit harder to make, recipe, try looking around in www.erowid.org or the Lycaecium (spelling?) vault. Me and a friend made some from one of their suggestions... knocked us on our asses.

just so you guys know i only cut and paisted the recipe that i posted...its the only one i have found on the net

pregnant women should still refrain from this drink, birth defects could be an unwanted side effect...
oh yeah and they vodka wouldn't be too good for the baby either

Dont be surprised if that homemade stuff that people try to pawn off as absinthe is, well for the most part undrinkable..

And yeah, drinking alcohol while pregnant is never a good idea..

Just out of curiosity, where does one go to buy wormwood? I'm assuming my local Safeway does not carry it...

I'm going to try to pull off a small miracle here, and this is part of my market research.

I couldn't tell you that in all honesty. I'd have to do a little more research on the stuff itself. Most of what I've read portrays absinthe in a fairly romantic light, and its the romanticized stuff I'm usually the most skeptical about.

umm...comment, from someone else i may be wrong.
Absinthe cannot cause hallucinations from a small amount. if you drank enough to trip you would be long dead because the hallucinagon is in a small amount. hence, you trip, you take the poison as well, R.I.P whomeveer you be and i get your car.

Absinthe is just as safe as any other alcohol out there, the Absinthe that is produced professionally that is...

And it is not a hallucinogenic, most of the classic hallucinations that you read about could either be attempts at being poetic/overly dramatic, or could be attributed to unusual brewing practices in the older (AKA around 100 years ago) Absinthe producers.
For example some companies had used zinc to help the green coloration of their product, some lead content from piping in the distilling machinery and poor grade alcohol that might as well be used as paint remover...

But if you drink enough of any alcohol, you will see stuff, other than your guts after you have puked them out...

and as for where to find wormwood...look at shops on the net..or ebay or ewitch...they have all kinds of herbs and stuff

For the actual wormwood herb you might allso want to try some of your local "new age" shops in the yellow pages..

*sighs* alas alaska has no new age shopes that sell herbs..only books and such...and there is only one in the state
