View Full Version : question about bible
euphoric flame 04-24-01, 23:11 I have a question about the bible...
I'm not a feminist... and I'm not doing anything to cause controversy... but does anyone know if any females wrote in the bible? and who gets to write in the bible? Just anyone that say a religous event happen or what?? I dont get it... No one i've ever asked knew where the sources of the bible came from and I'm just posting this thread to accuire new knowledge... thank you
Scholars have figured out that who wrote which section, but they don't know who the who is. They assign letters to the different who's. This doesn't help tell us who they are but it helps us understand that certain men wrote more than one part of the book and I think we may have approximate time periods and stuff for each of the letters...err, men.
If you want to stick to christian tradition, no, no females wrote any of the bible. There are a few stories in there headlining women, but we're talking about a culture where it was forbidden for women to read and write. Hell, it was forbidden for them to even attend church in some cases.
But that's a rant for another time.
Christian tradition? I find truth much more interesting.
Dark Messiah 04-24-01, 23:42 But that only means that if women did read (or participate in) parts of the Bible where it was viewed as unethical for non-males to do so that they would cover it up. I still say if there was a Jesus, she was female. Hey, I should find a Southern Baptist church sometime and tell them that...
Well, the truth is that during the time the bible was supposedly written, most women did not know how to read and write. It was a very male dominated society, and I'm sure they rather walk on nettles before allowing a woman to write anything supposedly inspired by god.
I dunno, I think Jesus was a man, for the simple reason that during that era a female savior would never have caught on. Female babies were still being left out to die from time to time. Daughters were used as barganing tools.
So it wasn't a real sacrifice to lose a daughter. Now, a son, everyone could identify with. To lose a son was a completely different story. (Sorry, did a paper on the possibility of a woman savior.) I do love the song Muhammad My Friend by Tori Amos though:).
And you should come here and say that. I think the whole group might have a collective heart attack. Or string you up, which ever comes first.
Nothing quite like a religion that has the rule that a woman is not allowed to teach a class with a man in it, because it puts her in higher authority then the man. And lord knows that we can't have that.
Dark Messiah 04-25-01, 00:03 Lord knows. But the point of that would be that Jesus could of been female but they changed it in the Gospels to male so that the religion would catch on. The later Apostles said a lot of stuff that didn't synch with what Jesus actually said.
The only things Jesus ever said were created by whoever wrote the gospels. I don't remember what letters did, sorry to let you down.
That's entirely likely, Heathen. I've long thought that many parts of the bible are made up. Particularly anything after the ressurection. Especially since later parts of the bible seem to be the opposite of what was said by Jesus.
But the way I look at the word's of Jesus, is this. If you just take what he says, and ignore the rest of it, he makes sense. It's actually a good thing to follow much of what he says. My life will be enriched by it, and I hurt no one in the process of following those commandments.
Therefore, I am inclined to believe that at least that part of the bible, if not true, is at least on the right track.
However, once you start getting into the letter's of Paul, I start thinking that you've got society speaking instead of anything that's actually enlightening. But, hey, I've got it out for Paul anyway. *grin*

ive finally figured it out....you're a women.
euphoric flame 04-28-01, 20:46 I dont understand society.... just because a man has a dick, he's better? that's really stupid.. so anyway, the bible thing... since there are no women writing in the book and only men, doesn't that show that christianity is a sexist religion? If so, would a sexist religion do everything in their power to keep it in dominance? sooo christianity is bullshit? I dont know... I'm just asking if my thoughts actually make some logic sense...
Dark Messiah 04-28-01, 21:50 While there was certainly that impression in many ancient civilizations, Euphoric, it wasn't entirely pervasive. Considering many (most) of the authors of the various books of the Bible/Torah are unknown, I'd say assuming they were all male is a bit of a jump, considering how ancient a religion Judaism is (keeping in mind that in hunter/gatherer societies, women were usually considered superior) At any rate, certainly a large amount of Christianity is bullshit, but that's not a reason to discount the whole thing. Remember that at the time when the Bible was put together, there were many, many other "holy" books that were not included, and which 66 did ultimately end up in the Bible was decided by a council of regular humans who never claimed to be divinely inspired, so mistakes are to be expected.
Not necessarily. Not all of christianity is bullshit. Many denominations are.
I live with the part of it is bullshit. I have very baptist inlaws. According to many baptist's, women should never hold a position of authority. And the church that has a woman pastor is the church that is headed the way of the devil. Now, personally, I have no desire to be a pastor. However, if that was something I wanted to do, I'd like to be able to do it without listening to the lecture's from my inlaws.
According to many religions the man is the head of the woman. But, if you want to stick strictly to the bible (KJV), that's not actually true. What happans is you have too many people that take what they want out of the bible and bend it to what they say. That is what the problem is with having a cryptic book as the basis of your faith. I can make the bible say whatever I want, it's not hard. I can find verses to support what I believe and arrange them in such away that they sound good. Even if it goes directly against what the bible is actually trying to say.
Also, you have many people who are guilty of reading part of a verse and forgetting the rest of it. The Church of GodHatesFags is famous for that. (I know it's not very nice of me, but if I ever got a chance to meet any of those people I might be persuaded to do violent acts.)
My theory as to why the christian religion is very male dominated:
The part of the world where christianity originated was a very male driven society. Women had little to no rights. This was the way that part of the world worked. So the preachers of christianity molded the faith to fit society.
As the faith spread, they also spread their beliefs on women. Moving out into the female driven societies, adapting to fit the locale (adopting Mary as a worship figure to make the religion more woman friendly). And because men are generally stronger (especially then) it's quite easy to overcow.
However, times are changing now. Just because that was the way christianity was in the past does not mean it has to stay that way. Many denominations are moving up with the times. My little sister's first communion was today. At the mass they had a woman reading from the bible. We have altar girls. Heck, we don't have to wear hats to cover our "sinful" hair anymore. 30 years ago that could never have happaned.
Many other denominations are moving forward as well. We have women preachers, churches that agree to marry people of the same sex. Not just because it's PC, but also because finally some people are realizing that it is not our place to judge what someone does that does not hurt anyone else.
What many member's of the christian faith fail to realize (especially here in baptist land) is that while the bible tells the wife to submit to the husband, at the same time it tells the husband to submit to the wife.
You just have to look around to understand this. Marriages where one person dominates the other never last. And if they do they are miserable unhappy affairs. Marriages where each party respects each other and serves each other last forever.
The problem is, many denominations stop right at the verse where it says to submit to your husbands. They ignore the rest that tells the husband to treat the wife like she is the most wonderful thing on earth. They'd rather smack their wives into submission.
