Well, considering that everyone has done both (maybe not neccessarily in front of your "significant other" ), then I would go with falling on my face in front of a lot of people ( the potential for real physical harm is greater here).

Which is worse?

Counting your chickens before they hatch?
or
Putting all your eggs in one basket?
