The lack of maturity present in the very young is not a fabrication or a socal construct, in some cases even a lot of young adults arent mature enough to make choices in this regard that will not turn out to harm them but thats to a lesser degree.
They are not in the position to cope with emotional distress, its not that they should be sheltered from the entire world just from some of the things that they are unable to protect themselves from.
There was a scene from the movie Air Force One where the president`s teenage daughter was complaining about not being treated like a fully grown woman and said that back in cavemen times she would be a mother by now if I remember correctly he said: its called progress.
