Women in mythology - 07-20-02

For Jordyn...here you have the official feminist thread.

What religions do you know of, where women had a strong position? Take one religion to each post, this could turn out to become a handy resource thread for later.

As for me...I choose the Norse...of course...

The women in the old Norse culture had a stronger position than most of their time. Though the men were masters on their ships and the battleground, once they entered the safety of home, their wives were in charge. She had the final word on everything, she handled finance, organized the house, the slaves, the kids. She, and she alone had the keys to every door.

You see this mirrored in their religion too. Even though Odin was the King of the Gods, his words mattered little if his wife, Frigg, had objections. Frey, the male fertility God, was but a weak image of his sister, Freya. Even though she might appear weak and humble, Idun was crucial to them all...she alone knew where the Golden Apples grew, the fruit that provided the Gods and Goddesses with eternal youth. Without these apples, they would grow old and die. Even Thor, the image of nmale dominance and physichal strength, would cower away with his tail between his legs if his wife Siv was angry with him.

As you can see...a seemingly male dominated society, but looking closer, you'll see the true power lied with the women.

You promised me the ending would be clear
You'd let me know when the time was now
Don't let me know when you're opening the door
Stab me in the dark, let me disappear
