Yes, they did kill a few thousand, in one moment. Still, I'd not expect those casualties to be the last... Terror threats are real, and like they forwarn now, a nuclear incident is not beyond terrorist capabilities...
You are protective of more then your security and rights... of your economy as well. A little overprotective... Then it results in poverty on other parts of the globe. This creates hatred... You would do well to check out agracultural subsidies (and the friction this causes near the mexican border), as well as the row on steel import taxes, which angered a lot of nations. (The latter move was even illegal, unsanctioned by the WTO. Bush doesn't care... Arrogant as he is.)
And I'm in the Netherlands. And we are FAR from one people. Our society is called a multicultural one... Where most groups tolerate eachother. Left and right extremists are relativily scarce... (with the shooting of the -populist- (not rightwing) politician Fortuyn being an unfortunate exeption) And it is not easy. But this society has worked for as long as it existed...
As for your ancestors: They were European settlers who fled (mostly) imperialist Europe, who slew the native American population and stole their land. THAT is America. THAT is who founded it. A nation... Of thieves.
