It really is a common trend. This is the pattern of pop culture. Ever since Elivs, actually... though if you want to think in terms of modern boy bands, the Beachboys/Beattles. And yes, pop punk will be gone, but right now we're seeing the rise of pop metal. Then it will go back to real pop, then some form of rock, then to a harder form of rock, then pop, etc.
